A Cold Wind Blows

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Snow swirls, nearly blinding you. The cold seeps into your bones, threatening to freeze you in place. Then, out of the corner of your eye, movement. You are not alone in the storm.

A Cold Wind Blows takes place in June, 1922. The investigators find themselves snowed in at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado during what was supposed to be time to relax. An out-of-season howling blizzard has put everyone on edge. When other hotel guests start disappearing, the group must uncover the hotel’s secrets and brave the elements outside to discover the cause.

This Pulp style Cthulhu adventure is intended for a group of experienced investigators with some degree of Mythos knowledge and can be played in a single session.

How “pulpy” should characters be for this? Making some pulp pregens and wanted to make extra sure!

Hi Jazmin,

This is definitely a scenario when combat might happen, so having more action-oriented characters can be helpful. That said, there's no one 'right way' to play it, so do what feels fun and enjoy.

Thanks

I mean like, standard pulp with the double hp, and two talents, medium pulp with double hp and one talent or low pulp with just double hp. I have very limited experience with making pulp characters and since pulp rules are a bit flexible is why I ask.^^

Noted on the characters than are able to fight. (I was considering Dilettante, Valet, Private Eye and Professor.)

Standard pulp is probably the best best unless you want the players to have a hard challenge.

An excellent first scenario from a participant in the Call of Cthulhu track at the Storytelling Collective's "Write Your First Adventure" event.

The opportunity to spend a few days snowed in at the famous Stanley Hotel is too good to pass up.

Note that the author recommends the scenario be geared towards more experienced investigators, but my own feeling is that investigators without Cthulhu Mythos skill can still get a good handle on what's going on just by being observant. So - don't be afraid to bring your players to the Stanley!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
