Intriguing Options Volume 4: Spells + Spellcasters

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Greetings, eager intriguer! Be not beleaguered! For in this volume, we offer players and GMs an array of intriguing options to add variety, depth, and dimension to any game of Honor + Intrigue. Do not think of this as a book of rules… they’re more like… guidelines on how to adapt your campaign in various ways.

This fourth volume details incorporating the new Spellcaster Career into your campaign, which acts as a heroic alternative to the Sorcerer originally written for villainous NPCs. This system can either be used in addition to or as a replacement for that one. Spellcasters can be anything from wizards, shamans, clerics, druids, or even telepaths and psionicists. This volume features a spell list of over 140 spells, including special effects gained when a spell is mastered. In addition, Enchanted Items are included to incorporate into the existing crafting rules and a list of sample magic items. We also introduce “Sword-Casters”, a new type of Dueling Styles that incorporate magic spells with fighting maneuvers to achieve unique effects.

Or you can get the entire Intriguing Options series all together (with some extra material) in the Tome of Intriguing Options.

Now that Vol 4 is here, what about the promised PoD option (also asking for The Duelist's Guide)? :)

I'm about half done with making the index. Looking to have this come to KS in the last week of June (you can join the mailing list here: https://forms.gle/4TE2sUTJHJ9UZWrG6 ) Once the index is made, the next steps are getting it ready for PDF (bookmarks, links) and Print on Demand (setting up the cover file, making the file printer-ready).

Great news, Patrick! The Kickstarter for the Tome of Intriguing Options has begun. It contains everything in Intriguing Options Volumes 1-4, the rules from the Duelist's Guide plus more! More dueling styles, more weapons, more vehicles, more high-tech gadgets, more magic items! And it will be for Print-On-Demand!
You can check it out at tinyurl.com/IntriguingOptions

Awesome! Will these spells integrate pretty seamlessly into the original parent game (BoL)? Or will that take a lot of work? I only ask since I struggle a bit with the BoL system - it's too freeform for someone brought up on DnD :)

For 90% of the spells, the answer is yes. The main conversion needed is to remember that Might = Strength, Daring = Agility, Savvy = Mind, and Flair = Appeal. Fortune Points = Hero Points.
There are a few spells that will reference mechanics that BoL doesn't use like Composure or Advantage. Composure is easy to just tack on as all it is a -1 penalty to all rolls until the condition is reversed, accumulating to a max of -3. So if a spell says you have to make a check or lose Composure, that is just a -1 on your rolls if you fail the check for as long as the spell says.
For spells that make an enemy lose Advantage, I would substitute that with a Penalty Die on their next round's rolls. If something causes you to gain Advantage, I'd substitute a Bonus Die on the next round's rolls.

I was thinking to myself "Does the Honor+Intrigue game have enough for me to run a really lightweight, not as cumbersome Warhammer 40k style sci-fi Gothic game today, but I really would need to work on how Psykers would be managed. I was coming to make sure you hadn't added anything recently, and this was added just today. I am taking this as a sign from the universe and going to make it happen for my table now.

I hope it goes well, and "Victorian Gothic" was how I wanted to have the uniforms look for some of the space opera character art (the cover of IO2 and the piece illustrating Telekinesis in IO4).
While I don't know specifics of that setting, I would imagine you can adapt it pretty easily. The spell lists given for each type of caster are really suggestions, so you can remove ones that don't make sense, or add ones that do. One way to really build the type of caster you want is to choose one or two Magic Specialties. So if one of the types of "psychers" you want to have are pyrokinetics, add the Fire Specialty to a Telepath. This technique works for any sort of specialist caster whether it is a psionic, cleric, wizard, etc.

Also do be sure to read the "Spells in Spaaace" sidebar as it gives advice on how to do magic/psionics in Space Opera given the much wider scope of range and area that are possible to be involved.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
