What kind of game is Adventurous?

Adventurous is a rules-light and streamlined fantasy RPG in the OSR vein but with modern and intuitive mechanics. It uses a D6 Dicepool core mechanic that handles everything from combat to jumping across a chasm. Adventurous is built for speed and ease of use, but still offers the eight iconic classes, each with unique abilities and features. Whether you're coming from modern TTRPGs (like D&D 5e), old-school games, or video games, Adventurous will feel familiar.

In the book you will find:

  • 179 pages of tersely written content
  • All the core rules, from character creation to combat
  • Eight iconic classes with distinct abilities
  • A bestiary containing 33 classic creatures, all with unique abilities and behaviour
  • Equipment lists and common services
  • Procedures for dungeon exploration and overland travel
  • Magic items, cursed items and rules for potion brewing
  • A campaign setting and region map with unique rumors to use as adventure seeds
  • 20 pages of Game Mastering advice
  • Character sheets
  • Game master cheat sheet

All the rules and resources you need, in one single book.

Notable features

  • D6 Dice pool core mechanic - The core mechanic of Adventurous, which is used in all situations where the player characters interact with the world, is a dice pool of six-sides dice.
  • Built from the ground up - Adventurous is not built on legacy systems and mechanics. Instead it's built based on feedback and input from players, novice to the TTRPG hobby, to make sure it's all intuitive and easy to grasp.
  • Player facing rolls - All rolls in Adventurous are made by the players. In combat, the player characters roll to hit and then roll to defend the opponent's attacks. This keeps the spotlight on the players and removes strain on the Game Master.
  • Low power progression - As the player characters level up, they won't grow vastly more powerful, instead they will grow "horizontaly" gaining new abilities instead of just increasing in power.
  • Horizontal progression means easy 'drop-in-drop-out' campaigns - The flat power curve in character progression means that a first-level character can play together with a max-level party with no hiccups. This unique design choice allows for smooth open-table play, optimal for episodic and West Marches campaigns.
  • Fast character creation - Creating a character in Adventurous doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes.
  • Slot based inventory - No need to track weight, encumbrance is handled by inventory slots.
  • Unique monster design - Monsters in Adventurous use a random attack mechanic, meaning that both GM and players will be surprised at the tactics employed by monsters.
  • Deadly - Adventurous is a lethal game, a goblin will always pose a threat, at first level and max level.
  • Iconic classes you will recognize - Adventurous is not trying to break new, novel ground when it comes to classes. Instead they are the eight iconic ones you've come to expect, and with abilities and features that let you live out your class fantasy.
  • Dungeon exploration procedure - The procedure and mechanics for dungeon exploration makes it easy for the GM to track time, and adds a layer of time pressure and uncertainty for the exploring adventurers.
Easy to learn, play and run!
Adventurous is designed to be easy to learn, easy to play and easy to run. We hope you will enjoy it and that it will create many fond memories for you and your friends!

I really like your Adventurous system!

But I do have a couple of questions and a typo:

1. The Warrior Rage ability says "On a strong success the activation of this ability..." What test do you use to activate Rage?
2. Is a Dagger supposed to do as much damage as a longsword?

pg 140 Dragon Abilities lists "Tick Scales" instead of "Thick Scales".

Hi Marc! Thanks for your purchase, I’m glad you like the book. Here are some answers.<br />
1: Rage, like all class abilities are activated by a test of the primary attribute, so STR for warriors. On a strong success you gain rage and can act again, on a weak success you gain rage and can act next turn, in a failure you do not gain rage.<br />
2: Yes, all weapons are deadly in the right hands.<br />
3: Thanks! That goes in the 2.0 backlog.

Ignore my answers above, the new DTRPG seems to be quite buggy I’m afraid. Took three tries to get the comment to register correctly.

Hi there, I just bought the game and it's a good read so far.
I spotted an errata : Page 23, in the top left title, ISPIRATION instead of INSPIRATION

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
