The End is Near

It is October 1922 and a meteor is heading towards Eorthe.

Hysteria and despair spreads like wildfire.

Is this the end of Doggerland?

jungerland_3d_web.jpg

An unearthly madness strikes the citizens of Glimminge. At the observatory, an ageing astronomer is murdered as the meteor’s red glow intensifies by the hour. Amid doomsday heralds and a frantic population, the investigators must find the murderer before it strikes again.

But what if it is already too late?

The Red Star is a standalone scenario in three parts for the Odd Soot roleplaying game. It is also the first book of the longer campaign A Falling Mind. The following two books will be published during 2023.

The scenario is written by Nils Hintze (Tales from the Loop, Vaesen, The Walking Dead) and Erik Hylander (Symbaroum).

In addition to the three-part scenario, the book also contains:

  • Free PDF with handouts: Newspaper clippings, handwritten letters, typed reports, PC and NPC portraits. Make the mystery more tangible to your players with these meticulously handcrafted clues in the style of the 1920s. The PDF is available as a download on FrostByte Books's website.

  • Map of Glimminge, capital of Doggerland. Two separate versions are provided - for the players and for the Game Master.

  • Pre-generated player characters, The Autumn Leves, with full backgrounds and a shared Circle, so you can start playing right away.

To make full use of this scenario, you need the Odd Soot rulebook. But if you know any classic d100 RPG you will feel right at home.

The Red Star is published under a Mythras Gateway license.

This looks very interesting. I have a suggestion for correction: Could the maps of Glimminge be displayed in the PDF with higher resolution? The smallest font is hardly readable.

Hi Tobias, I see what you mean! It's not ideal, but it helps keep the file size down. The free scenario handouts - there is a download link at the end of the book - have high-resolution images throughout, including the map of Glimminge. I hope that helps. Otherwise, just drop me an email at clarence.redd (a) gmail.com and we'll work something out.

Thank you for your answer. I tried that several times, but did not get the email with the link. So I will try the second suggestion.

yeah, I've tried several times to get the handouts, but no email ever arrives. The link on the Red Star page also just links to a Strikingly site that doesn't seem to go anywhere either.

Sorry about the botched downloads! I still haven't figured out why it's not working for some. If all else fails - or if you just prefer something that actually works - try this link:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
