The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Return to Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying, a brand new adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien using the rules for 5E. Based on the second edition of The One Ring™ roleplaying game by Francesco Nepitello, The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying contains everything you need to create exciting adventures set in the world’s most popular fantasy setting - six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.

Does anyone know how compatible this is with Cubicle 7's Adventures in Middle Earth 5E rules, etc.?

From the author on the LotR One Ring/LotR RPG Discord: https://discord.gg/the-one-ring-lotr-rpg-348254014598545408

The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying is, put as briefly as possible, an adaptation of The One Ring 2nd edition to the rules of 5e, just as Adventures in Middle-earth was for The One Ring 1st edition. LotRRPG is not, however, a second edition of AiME (as some might think); it is in fact a true reboot, a new iteration of the 5e rules adapted to Middle-earth by same team as The One Ring.
Regarding the details of the setting, adventures and landmarks, you will not find any additional information compared to The One Ring (if you already own it); as far as the rules are concerned, however, you will find everything you need to play with the 5e system in Middle-earth as faithful as possible to the literary source

Was attribute generation completely left out of the book?

Call me crazy, but there is no information on how to roll up your attributes. Roll 3d6? Point buy? Standard array? Also, there is no chart showing the attribute bonuses.

Now, having played D&D 5e, I know how D&D does it, and I assume that I can use the same character generation methods, but seriously, HOW THE **** does this get left out of the chapter on character creation? Did I blink and miss it?

And if this book gets purchased by anyone who hasn't played D&D, how the hell will they learn how to roll up a character? Am I the only one not seeing this?

To play LotRRPG you either need the D&D 5e Basic rules, which can be downloaded for free from WotC's site, or the D&D 5e Player's Handbook. All the information needed for character creation are contained there and not repeated in LotRRPG, except of course for any rules that are meant to replace those in the Basic rules (such as Cultures, Callings, Backgrounds, new skills, etc.).

When will the screen pdf for the Lord of the Rings 5e version be available?

Hello, other than changes made to fit the 5e rules system, does anyone know if this otherwise modifies or expands the content, timeframe or anything from TOR 2.0? I'm asking for a comparison of the two pdf products available here on DTRPG, not printed products, boxed sets, bundles, etc. Thanks for any info you could provide.

I like Both The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying core book and the Shire Adventures. I do have one gripe about them. The maps an not very good quality when zoom in. Will there be better quality ones in the future?

I love the early-access idea, however this is way to expensive for an unfinished product.
Yes I know I will get the end product, make it expensive when is finished.
Especially because this product competes with TOR. I will have to wait until I see the reviews to see which one I pick.
You deny me the possibility of a preview for now because every dollar multiply by 5 in my currency.

No one is forcing you to buy it until release.

I know everyone is against pre-ordering or early access, but as game designer myself I find it really important.
Now it has to be a win - win. I get to test the product to see if I like it, they get feedback, the feedback is really important.
But since the price was the same I had no incentive.

Am I blind or is this .pdf not complete due to the fact that it doesn't contain the "back papers" which should include the journey maps for players and the GM? Without the journey maps it truly makes this purchase unplayable. I would have just held out for the print copy.

The pdf is now complete with back papers (including both versions of the journey map), and you can download it for free... so maybe you could consider changing your review?

Early Access what!? For a pdf or is this for a new video game on Steam....hummmmm
Not to mention why use a dying game system like 5E, as WoTC is killing the old OGL 1.0a and it's greedy palms going to this new D&D NoOne system shill.
Just write a book with your own system drop WoTC BS.

With a name like LOTR you'd think they would put in more work. The art is ok, maybe more color photos and content. Ill stick with Adventures in Middle Earth. I own all the pdfs and books

Cubicle 7 had the licence, did One ring and Adventures in Middle earth, then lost the licence, Free League picked it up and got the Ring engine from C7, but are starting from fresh for LOTR RPG.

So expecting crossovers from AIME is asking for a lot.

Exactly. Don't we already have AiME (Adventures in Middle-Earth). I'm not even a fan of D&D 5e (aka "3e lite" & most of whose "innovations" were done better by M&M2e in 2005), but the AiME books are *beautifully* done, & their innovative sub-systems for making journeys & audiences with powerful figures *meaningful* instead of merely filler & quest/reward-dispenser, respectively, are so good I'm adapting them for my own homebrew.

Okay, I looked at the preview. If I am understanding from the Table of Contents this is not a standalone rpg. Does this version require using the D&D 5e rules books?

Correct. Bottom right of page 7. "This is not a stand-alone game..."

The only question is WHY??? Like, this is so confusing... Adventures in Middle-Earth was a standalone 5e engine game. Sometimes Free League does things that seriously boggle the mind.

I'll just get the pdfs for AiME and get those printed instead.

AiME wasn't a stand-alone game, it just had classes, cultures, virtues (feats) and rules for the Shadow, journeys, councils and downtime.

You can't get those PDF's anymore, Cubicle 7 lost the license and, unless you already had them, they are no longer available, and never will be.

@Cyril: They have just published "Uncharted Journeys"; D&D rules for travelling that adapt the AIME mechanics. I thought you might find it of interest if you were not already aware of the product.

How compatible is it with Cubicle 7's old Adventures in Middle-Earth? I know it's functionally a replacement.

Kinda. It is basically a revised edition... the main book does not include the men of Lake Town, Gondor, or Rohan. Nor Beorings or Mirkwood Elves. You do get Lindon Elves instead. As far as classes at least Scholar, Treasure Hunter and Warden are familiar. The Slayer is out...
a new class Captain is in. Wanderer is now a Messenger and the Warrior is the Champion. So far the art is very minimal. I did get the second book on the Shire... I was hoping for something different, but regrettable purchases both considering I have the previous system. It is hard to beat Adventures in Middle Earth. Just waiting on Moria...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
