Scion: Masks of the Mythos

Selected Option:

The Mythos is older than humanity, Gods, and Titans, with an unknowable otherness that can shatter them all. This slumbering horror lurks in the shadows, carrying out its alien machinations with little regard for those beneath it until it requires pawns.

Those that touch the Mythos are forever altered. The World explodes into full view for them, leaving some shattered, others power-mad, and still others knowing only secrecy protects humanity. Mythos Scions fair little better, empowered by these alien beings that alter their very essence, the ability to break Fate and leave the walls of reality weaker in their wake. These human embodiments of the Mythos are not good or evil; such easily definable morality is for lesser beings. What does one do when their power comes with a cost?

Some highlights of Masks of the Mythos include:

  • An entire new pantheon: the Mythos
  • A trove of new Callings and relics
  • Expanded investigation rules
  • A detailed tour of the Miskatonic Hollow, including Arkham and Innsmouth
  • An introductory scenario for a new band of Scions

Do you have the willpower to face the Mythos? To become the Mythos…?

Saints & MonstersScion Second Edition Player's Guide: Saints & Monsters

Discover what lurks in the hidden corners of myth.

There is more to The World than the children of the Gods — more than Heroes and Demigods. Legends speak of stranger things; of mortals who challenge the very Gods themselves, or who see Fate’s invisible workings laid bare; of creatures of every kith and kind who still dwell, here and there, alongside humanity; of sorcerers who tamper with things they should not, tempting the ire of the Gods with their hubris; and of the children of the Titans, whose inhuman ichor burns away at their very humanity.

What tales will you tell of such wonders?

Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero are required to use this book, although Scion: Demigod and Mysteries of the World are useful additions.

Scion Player’s Guide — Saints & Monsters contains:

  • Two new Callings: Outsider and Shepherd!
  • Expanded rules for playing Saints, Prophets, and Denizens!
  • Full rules for playing Sorcerers and Titanic Scions!
  • Edges, a new character creation system, and new takes on the Storypath system!

I see it mention some callings that don't exist. Monster, primeval and Tyrant. Are they inversions?

Monster, Primeval, and Tyrant are Titanic Callings. They can be found in Titanomachy and Saints & Monsters.

Are the crunchy bits all Scion-specific, or are there rules that would be easily adaptable to other ST/SP game lines (such as Trinity, Chronicles of Darkness, or They Came From...)?

I may not be the best person to answer this question because I am not SUPER creative when it comes to TTRPG design, but the FLUFF for the monsters is universal and fantastic. The dice pools should work for other storypath games (Trinity (I am thinking Trinity Continuum: Adventure! specifically) would be the easiest, I am not familiar with They Came From.) I would VERY MUCH struggle to adapt any of the "crunchy" bits into World or Chronicles of Darkness and would never try with Exalted.

Thanks for your response. I know that all the Storypath games use the same core mechanics; however, Callings and Knacks are Scion-specific rules that wouldn't transfer over to other settings. There seems to be a healthy selection of creatures listed in the table of contents, at least, and I suppose you could use relics in other games, but I was wondering if there were any other player-facing rules included. New Edges, for instance, or new uses for skills (would Mythos knowledge fall under Occult?). What are the "expanded investigation rules" like?

Correction: When I wrote Edges, I meant Merits. (Got Savage Worlds on the brain.) Also, another question that occurred to me: are there any sort of sanity rules included?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
