A sequel to the 2019 supplement Captains of the Scarlet Tabard, EXILES is a companion volume which advances the known lore of the author’s World of Oldskull campaign setting, while also serving as an introduction to the ongoing saga of the Realm of Tyrrhenia, the Chaos Plague, Castle Oldskull, and the Free City State of Grimrook.

Herein, your worthy guide — Damian Prester, Plague Patriarch in service to His Overlordship — will introduce you to the old school fantasy city of Grimrook, the Overlord, and the many threats which assail the Order of the Scarlet Tabard and its citadel, the Crimson Spire.

Ongoing adventurer and mercenary triumphs throughout the bloody dungeons of Castle Oldskull have awakened the wrath of the Drow and their Serpent Folk allies. A dread Serpentine curse has corrupted one of the Scarlet Order’s most trusted Captains, leading to betrayal and chaos throughout the Ushirian dungeons, the ranks of the Order, and the Drow-assailed alleyways which lead down into the Undercity. While the Grimrook Legion wars against the Drow, the Overlord has called upon the Scarlet Order to recruit new adventurers and heroes from lands afar in hope of restoring order before all is lost.

EXILES OF THE SCARLET TABARD serves as an introductory setting guide for players and Game Masters alike.

This supplement has been written to honor the generous contributors who participated in the highly successful 2022 Castle Oldskull / Bundle of Holding charity and funding drive, following the July 4 Arapahoe County fire which threatened the author’s neighborhood and family. Participants in the funding drive raised funds in support of the author’s family, as well as over $1,200 for the Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, generating over $13,000 in total sales for more than 4 million pages’ worth of Castle Oldskull gaming lore. In recognition of their spirit and support, all of the NPCs featured in this volume are partly inspired by the user names of the top-funding contributors. Ladies and gentlemen of the Bundle, consider yourselves immortalized in the Chronicles of Oldskull!

This e-supplement will always be set to Pay What You Want. Please feel free to “tip” the author if you like what you see, or you can pay nothing at all. Whatever you decide, please download, plug the Scarlet Order and Grimrook into your own old school fantasy game world, and enjoy!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
