The Perilous Wilds - Revised Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The Perilous Wilds combines Dungeon World's approach to collaborative world-building with the old-school RPG reliance on random tables to generate content on the fly, woven together by modifications to the original Dungeon World travel moves. The main differences between the use of tables in The Perilous Wilds and their use in older RPGs is an emphasis on exploration and discovery over combat encounters, and the baked-in methodology of using randomized results as prompts rather than facts, to be interpreted during play.

This revised edition cleans up the layout, fixes minor text issues, and updates the dungeon generation procedure.

The book is 76 digest-size pages, divided into the following sections:

  • Learn the Language: a glossary of terms
  • Draw the Map: guidelines for collaborative cartography
  • Lead the Way: alternative rules for followers, by Jeremy Strandberg
  • See the World: new moves and guidelines for undertaking perilous journeys
  • Weather the Storm: suggestions and moves for handling weather
  • Ask the Fates: a host of tables for generating wilderness adventure
  • Plumb the Depths: rules for creating dungeons during prep and on the fly
  • Live to Tell the Tale: five new compendium classes
  • Trust Your Gut: advice for improvising overland adventure
  • Name Every Person: sample name lists for people, places, and mounts

The collaborative map-making guidelines and all of the tables are system-neutral (usable with any RPG rules). Although the tables are structured to tie directly into the rewritten travel moves, they can be used in any game in which a fantastical landscape is explored.

The new follower rules are written by Jeremy Strandberg, and are intended to give NPC hirelings more substance without a significant increase in bookkeeping.

Was wondering on page 50 (Danger) is the 1: Unnatural Entities correct? It's the same table as page 46 (Discover) 1: Unnatural Feature. I didn't see a discussion on it nor a change in the PDF.

It is indeed incorrect! This was pointed out to me a few days ago, and I will be correcting and updating the PDF early this coming week.

Hey Jeff -- you mean you clicked on the link and didn't get the discount? If so, Argh! That is frustrating. Time to figure out why it didn't work.

Okay, thank you for the data point. I think I found the problem, so I'm going to annoy everyone and re-send the message.

Very minor changes reflected in the current PDF, so there's no need for you to re-order.

Well, I'll be making my order for somethings I want to get here on Drivethrurpg soon. Looks like I'll have to wait until I make another order to maybe get this book. I really need it. Without it Dungeon World is pretty much useless to play for me. To be honest at this point I'd be happy to get a compy of the unrevised vertion. :(

Hi, I think I've spotted another error.

Page 25 includes the following text: "The creature tables on page 53 can be used as a starting point, supplemented by any of the details tables on page 54, especially ability, no. appearing, feature, size, and tag."

But there doesn't appear to be a table labeled "feature" amongst the "details" tables.

I love the new tables! Especially the more abstract Details tables -- Color and Design are exactly the sort of prompts I look for to improvise an interesting description.

I've spotted a lingering error, however. On the "Discovery - Natural Feature" table, the entries "6-8 Water Feature" and "7-8 Landmark" have overlapping ranges.

All of the errors mentioned in the discussion here have been corrected, and all files have been updated. They were fairly minor, but I am looking into a way to give customers who bought the PoD edition some kind of discount for a replacement copy.

In response to the page numbering .... it goes, 46, (blank), 47, 47, 50. This is also included in the most recent download from yesterday (18OCT23).

Hey everyone, so sorry these questions have gone unanswered! I did not have "follow this discussion" checked so I have not been getting notifications.

Thanks for the notes about the various errors, I am in the process of fixing them! The PDF is obviously easy to update and I will look into how to make an updated print copy affordable for anyone who already bought one. When it's all ready to go I will send out a notification via DTRPG to everyone who purchased the PDF and/or PoD version.

Regarding the integration of TPW with the 2nd edition of Freebooters on the Frontier, Freebooters 2e has its own (vast array) of tables, a few of which are tables from TPW that have been tweaked to better suit the game.

Here's the link to the Lampblack & Brimstone discord if you have further questions.

So, sounds like I have to hand write edits to make the hard copy work or have the errors been fixed?

I see this revised edition and notice that the original edition is no longer available. For those of us who purchased the first edition, will we need to purchase this separately? It sounds like the revisions are relatively small.

Also, how do procedures in this revised edition compare to those in the ongoing Freebooters on the Frontier development?

Hi, I appreciate this revised edition.
But there appears to be a typo to correct in the Dungeon Size chart on page 65: The heading of that chart's left column should read "1D12" & not "1D20."
Plus this typo is in the same chart on page 17 of the Perilous Tables.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
