Back of the Book

They’re coming.

They’re hungry.

But they have no idea who they’re messing with.

In Survival of the Able, you’re a disabled person living in a European almshouse when the Black Death comes to your town. Little is known about where the plague originated or how to stop it, but those who die from it are rising again—and they’re hungry for flesh. Since everyone else has succumbed to the plague, it’s up to a handful of you to make your way out of town and away to safety.

In this game, you will:

  • Play a disabled character who lives in Medieval Europe during the time of the Black Plague
  • Encounter challenges such as disease, zombies, burning buildings, terrible weather, fatigue, and stress
  • Experience discrimination based on your disability, fear that you might have the plague, or both
  • Overcome incredible challenges against all odds and despite your disability, as able-bodied people around you panic and fall victim to the zombies
  • Try to avoid a fate worse than death--turning into a zombie and eating your friends.

You may not be the biggest, the strongest, or the fittest, but you’ll come out a better person if you’re able to survive.

About this Game

Survival of the Able is not your typical zombie gorefest. It’s a game about teamwork and overcoming adversity.

  • You won’t play a hero, but you may do heroic things.
  • Your environment may disable you, but you won’t let it stop you.
  • You’ll fight zombies, but you’ll discover who the real villains are.

This game uses a variation of the Fudge System™ and is best played using Fudge or Fate Dice.

More Information

Survival of the Able was designed, written, and produced by disabled people, but all are welcome to play. We deliberately set out to create an experience that is accessible to everyone.

This game is available in several formats, so you can choose which options work best for you.

  • Vision Layers-enabled PDFs, so you can toggle art, backgrounds, and text on-and-off to suit your needs.
  • Flattened PDFs in a variety of color, black-and-white, and font choices. If you are color blind, visually impaired, or just prefer to read a book without distractions, you can download the file that works best for your needs.
  • Fixed-layout and re-flowable ePub. Read your book on virtually any device and adjust the options as you see fit.
  • Three choices of font for your reading preference. Choose from graphic, easy-to-read, and dyslexia-friendly fonts.
  • Print books in soft or hardcover, color or black-and-white, and any of the three font options. Choose from 12 different configurations.

Regardless of which font you choose, the PDF and default ePub options are set to 11-points in size to ensure a comfortable reading experience for most people.

For non-visual readers, we have tagged the PDFs and included alternative text for all the illustrations. Each page has been tested for screen reader compatibility using NVDA for Windows 10 and TalkBack for Android 12. Your exact set-up may vary. Please reach out to us if you experience any issues.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
