Hostile Solo

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Hostile Solo is a stand-alone solo roleplaying game set in a grim and gritty future, inspired by movies like Outland, Alien, Dark Star, Pitch Black, Event Horizon and The Thing.  It allows a single player to create and play the roles of a group of blue-collar workers out in deep space, overcoming difficult challenges and facing unknown terrors. Although the name and the cover art suggest that the player will create only a single character, in fact the game is best played with a ‘crew’ of characters. Your crew will interact, fall-out, develop their own schemes and build bonds of friendship. Steer them through their chosen career; either asteroid mining, exploring, freight shipping and salvage, corporate troubleshooting, colony operations or US Marine interventions.

Both full-colour and white-background versions are provided. Hardback and Softback also available, please check the Zozer Games website for details.

Since it is stand-alone, everything needed to play is found within the book, including a brief description of the Hostile setting, a set of concise character creation rules and a quick-play task and combat system. For players wanting additional depth in rules and setting, they can use all of the resources from the Zozer Games’ Hostile table-top roleplaying game. This is made up of a 319-page Setting book, a 236-page Rules book and more than a dozen supplements that flesh out the universe of Hostile. None of these are required to play Hostile Solo, of course, but players might find the additional detail useful.

Solo roleplaying allows a single player to enter a fictional universe, to become embroiled in plots and decision-making and to gain the satisfaction of success and achievement normally associated with traditional table-top play with a group of friends. Using a combination of random encounters, character-driven motivations and on-going storylines, the plot will develop in exciting and interesting ways, surprising even you! Tasks and situations are resolved using various methods, the most powerful of which is the scene resolution mechanic. This innovative tool allows you to resolve an entire, complex scene involving multiple characters, with just a single dice roll.

· An immersive and realistic Near Space setting

· Six campaign types: asteroid mining, Marine combat, corporate troubleshooters, shipping & salvage, exploring, colony survival.

· Character creation rules

· Complete roleplaying and combat rules

· Innovative scene resolution mechanics

· Solo mapping tools for ships, stations and colony outposts

· Unique tools for solo play

· Dozens of random encounter and event tables

· Nexus—a fully detailed cyberpunk city on Earth’s equator

· Fully compatible with all Zozer Games’ HOSTILE products

I'm about to start playing, and was wondering if anyone can clarify item size. Does an Engineer's Toolkit, size 4, really count as 4 out of 6 items? And an axe takes up 3, the same as a Light Machinegun?

Size is more of a measure on ‘inconvenience’. The toolkit is full of power tools and such, probably in some kind of big carry case.

Group or crew character sheets are included with the download. Do you mean a character sheet for a single character? Check out the Zozer Games website, free sheets are offered as downloads on there under the Hostile tab.

Is there a way to incorporate aspects of the movies The Terminator and Scanners fairly easily? Basically just adding Terminators, an insane AI, and psychic powers is what I'm after.

Yes, its designed especially for that. We don’t have psychic powers, though, but if you have a version of Traveller you can port over its psionic rules.

Are the Terminators or similar robots in the base Hostile Solo game? If not, which book are they in?

Either the Hostile Setting book or theSynthetics supplement, I would recommend the Hostile a setting book.

Two little problems with the art ...
p.27 There is a picture with "Adobe stock" filigrans all over it.
p.83 there is a detail from an H.R Giger painting without any mention of the painter anywhere in the book.

Nicholas, could you check the image on page 27? That was sourced from free stock art provider, and I see no Adobe filigrans on it. Occasionally I do accidentally insert the preview image of art that I have purchased, and have to swap them around quickly!

Yep. I just downloaded the documents on a different computer. "Adobe Stock" filigrans are still there, on both versions (hostile-solo-printfriendly5.pdf and hostile-solo-colour5.pdf).

It may be hard to see depending of the configuration of your screen, as it is a grey filigrane on gray background. But the filigran appears more than 20 times ont the picture.

I'm currently deciding between Solo and Hostile Solo for running my next Solo Traveller (MGT2e) campaign. I frankly am not that interested in the Hostile system/setting. This is no offense to the author, I am simply not a fan of sci-fi horror. However, I see it does have 2 extra campaign types, one of which I'm highly interested in (asteroid mining). Is it worth double the price? Is the Solo stuff basically the same, just with Hostile integration? Interested in advice from those who have both (or the author)!

I have both.
I haven't played Solo, yet, but I'm setting up a Hostile Solo game currently.

The main difference I've seen is the progression of the space society and technology.
Hostile Solo is geared more towards '80s futurism/Modempunk Sci-Fi and space travel is harsh. Most everyday folks don't travel, unless they have to.

Solo is a bit more advanced, closer to a Star Wars/Star Trek progression. Civilian travel is more common. Solo gives you campaigns featuring bounty hunters or traders, both of which would be somewhat out of place in Hostile.

For me, personally, each campaign has its own strengths. I do like that there's guides to which types of characters to include to keep them thematically compatible.

If you decide to go with Solo, I'd still consider getting Hostile Solo. While it might be hard to fit the campaigns from Solo into Hostile Solo, it does look very possible to go the other way around. The campaigns from Hostile Solo would probably...See more

I forgot to add: Another key difference is that Hostile Solo has the core rules baked in and you don't need the rules book unless you want to add more details.
Solo requires you to have a copy of Cepheus or Traveller. This may not be a deciding factor for you, as you mention MGT2e in your post. But I wanted to add that for anyone else that may be deciding between the two and reading this.

Thanks for the comments, you were right that for me having the rules baked in was not a selling point. I also am not into the 80s futurism setting you are referencing, I like the standard Traveller experience with the high tech futurism. So I'll go with Solo I think, and maybe try out the campaigns in Hostile Solo down the road if its not enough for me.

Is there a possibility of an inverted map that's easier to print?
I want to print it out over four to six sheets but don't want to use all the ink to do it.

Thank you, also, for making Hostile Solo, as well as Star Trader/Solo.
These have been great additions to my solo gaming library.

Loving this so far! Thank you to all involved for putting this together!

I had a couple of rule questions on the shipping campaign.

1) The checklist's second item it to roll to see if a character has a 'stake' in the mission, but I don't see this explained anywhere. What does having a stake in the mission mean? I assume it's up to the player to come up with something, but just checking.

2) After completing a mission and returning to step 2, is it assumed that the crew has to return to Earth or a class B starport? Seems like this is implied, as receiving a new mission to carry cargo would not make sense if the crew is already out beyond the Outer Rim or something.

Thanks!

Hi Randy,

1) Yes, the 'stake' thing got written as as I went along. Its a hidden agenda or plot connection. "Rescue some scientists, but the chief scientist is married to character Z". You know, a 'Kirk-Carol Marcus' situation, or a Doom-style 'Karl Urban-Rosamund Pike' situation!

2) More likely the crew would pick up a local cargo (probably some type of raw material) to take back with them. Shipowners don't like to fly their ships empty!

Yes, you will remember Solo’s mini games, only one (exploration) was really suited to the Hostile setting. Hostile Solo takes the Solo game engine, beefs it up, adds some more modern solo mechanics and features and then adds six solo mini games. tailored to the Hostile setting. All of the previous material you bought in the Bundle of Holding can be used to expand your solo experience and provide you with more immersion and more options.

Paul E August 18, 2022 6:26 am UTC

Yes, it is actually compatible with the Hostile Rules, you could use that book with the solo book if you wanted more detail and rule complexity. But Hostile Solo includes cut down character creation rules, cut down space combat and ground combat rules and even a very shortened version of the planet creation rules. It is an entire roleplaying game in itself, faster to play, and although it is tailored to solo play, a referee could instead pick it up and use it as a fast-play version of the standard Hostile table top game if they wanted. It is a full and complete package for roleplaying solo.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
