Heckin' Good Doggos

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Heckin’ Good Doggos is a family friendly, all ages role-playing game where the players take on the roles of humankind’s best friends: The dog! It is a game of "Dogs doin' Dog Stuff" that focuses on the kinds of stories and adventures dogs can get into such as:

  • Finding their favorite treats.
  • Barking at that squirrel up in the tree.
  • Finding their human Best Friend who has gone missing.
  • Banishing an ancient spirit that threatens the neighborhood.
  • Scavenging for supplies in a futuristic wasteland.
  • And so much more!

Heckin’ Good Doggos is a game of make believe where players can experience the world from an animal’s point of view. Some things will seem familiar, like protecting their backyard from potential threats and protecting their owners, while others are purely fantastic and whimsical situations they find themselves in like helping a ghost resolve its business so it can leave this world. It is simultaneously serious and silly, with an emphasis on crafting scenarios that make players have a blast while also having to solve the many challenges they will experience in ways that only doggos can.

Checked this game out to review for TTRPGkids, and it was a pretty awesome - mechanics were easy to understand, it's got great world building through story-like sections interspersed with the mechanics and game discussion, and it has a lot of cool variation options that build off the base version (dogs in the real world) to create different flavors for your games (like introducing magic, mechs, superpowers, etc).

I do a full breakdown here, and I would recommend checking the game out:

You know what? For four bucks, I'm willing to take a chance on it. I've purchased shrink-wrapped physical books where the only preview I got was the cover art for a whole lot more than four bucks. BTW, love the cover art. And the title. Sold.

How was it? I would love to hear what the mechanics of the game were like.

The preview leaves much to be desired. Two of the eight pages are blank, and then there's two pages of credits and a cover page, which leaves only three pages of actual "content". One of these basically boils down to "This is a family-friendly RPG where you play a dog," which I already gathered from the product blurb, and the second is fiction (which is entertaining, but doesn't tell me anything about how the game plays). The only useful information about what's in the game is the table of contents, which is sparse and somewhat cryptic (what's in the "Neighborhood Pals" chapter, for instance)?

In a game with such a generic premise, the main selling point is the system, and the preview doesn't tell me anything about how the game plays. Why would I want to buy this game rather than just hacking together my own doggy game using Fudge or PDQ? (The preview of Never Going Home actually does contain a brief summary of how the +One System works; why couldn't you include...See more

Ditto. Show us some of the mechanics. Differentiate your game from any others that are out there. Give me a reason to want to purchase this over 9th Level’s “Very Good Dogs of Chernobyl” or Onyx Path Publishing’s “Pugmire”.

For a family-friendly game, is it a storytelling game like Evil Hat’s “Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple”? Or is it more in line with a retro clone like Flatland’s “Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures”?

A preview should answer some important basic questions about the game; this answers none of them.

I have no "dog" in this fight, but there's a preview right here on the site where you are supposed to give your money, and it contains almost no info. You should not have to run to web search. This is true of a lot of unknown games here, some of which have almost no info anywhere else, either.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
