Because Weapons Should Matter: A 5e Weapons Overhaul

I love 5e, but I don’t think you need an expert to let you know that 5e weapons are basic at best and completely unbalanced and nonsense at worse (I mean really morningstars? Why are you more expensive than battleaxes?!?!?). But put that on top of an obvious caster bias and you end up with a bunch of classes that feel far less useful and tend to resort to ‘I attack the monster’ with the same weapon turn on turn. Whilst I think 5e can do a lot more to cover this shortcoming I think overhauling the weapon system is a great start.

I am a historian and have used many medieval style weapons before, so I am hoping to share my experience with you to create a more ‘real’ feeling group of weapons. In my look into 5e Weapons I give guidance for people creating their own simple and martial weapons and then how to upgrade those weapons with unique features and traits to make those fighters amongst you a bit more support. I also go through some weapons as they appear on my medieval inspired world of Serenta and what traits those historical inspired weapons would have and how to implement them into your games.

If you like the look of this, then consider following me on Twitter @BeardedHalfling where I talk on medieval weapons every week and you can keep an eye out for my other works.

Question: is this compatible with older editions? Weapons have been *mostly* the same since variable weapon damage was introduced in Greyhawk (1975), and again in Moldvay Basic (1981). Advanced had that variation versus opponent size, which was dispensed with by the time we get to 5e (was that also gone from 3e and 4e?). BECMI has Weapon Mastery (which I am a huge fan of). So there is a bit of wiggle room for what one may find compatible.

It is built with 5e in mind and built around 5e. However the abilities in there should still work for at least 3.5, not sure about older additions unfortunate due to a lack of experience with those rules. However I believe it should be pretty comparable as the weapons themselves haven’t changed too much and at the very least would provide loads of inspiration.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
