Summer Camp Mystery is a family investigation focused RPG inspired by Scooby Doo, The Three Investigators, Gravity Falls, and other mystery shows and books for kids.

2.png

The players create their characters (known as the Kids) and together spend a week in a summer camp. They go for treks, swim on the lake... and solve a Mystery of the Monster!

The system is narrative-based, using a simplified Ironsworn system, which makes it easy to learn even for children. It also makes it possible to play the game without a GM - although this would be recommended only for more experienced players. Summer Camp Mystery utilizes the knowledge players already have from watching shows (we all know that the Monster is actually one of the adults in disguise!), so there is no need for lengthy explanations.

Grab a few friends, and set on gathering clues, wild speculation, and the final showdown with the Mystery Monster!

Made as a submission for Pocket Quest 2022.

Note: It is recommended that at least one player is familiar with playing TTRPGs, so they can guide less experienced players, especially if they are children. The format of Pocket Quest prevents us from listing extensive examples of gameplay, but this game tries to make it up by using knowledge the players already have from TV shows and books.

This game is not well-designed. Rather than attempt to actually create a workable adventure structure that could be played to a conclusion that made sense, the designer chose to layer aleatory processes on top of each other - random clues, random mystery, unassigned suspect/perpetrators. It's all random. The 'adult's who are presented as possible culprits don't have their motivations spelled out very well from the standpoint of what they expect to get from their part in 'the mystery'. Also, trying to make one adventure structure or adventure scenario span everything from Scooby-Doo-type 'rational' mysteries to Call of Cthulu/Friday The 13th slasher hell-scapes seems too ambitious. It would have been better to 'pick a lane' and figure out a way to make playing the scenario once or twice interesting. Random clues leading to a random solution just isn't satisfying.

Hello,
thank you for your comment. I'm not going to dispute it, I'd just like to point out two things:
1. It was never my intention for this game to be a Friday the 13th slasher - I've never even seen the movie. The Cthluhu variant refers to the Stranger Things as an inspiration, which is still a bunch of kids stumbling upon clues, not unlike in a Scooby-Doo episode. The main difference is the tone of the show.
2. The solution of the Mystery isn't random - it's up to players to come up with a theory that would explain the cloues they found. I took the inspiration from Brindlewood Bay, where it seems to work fine.
The game was meant to play with children, therefore the lack of strict rules that kids tend to ignore anyway. I'm sorry I didn't communicate that enough in the game.
Anyway, thanks again for the feedback :)

I really appreciate you addressing this. The kid-orientated design, and the Brindlewood Bay influence, have convinced me to buy it. Looking forward to trying it out with the family!!

I was little sceptical for a game from new publisher BUT the game is suprisingly good! I love mechanic of "a day" so you have a causal activities and later a mystery investigation came. It has that stranger things / IT / tales from the loop vibes which i really like. Awesome buddy keep on doing great work.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
