At the edge of the solar system, the crew of the CCS Orpheus is about to explore a dark new world...

For several centuries, scientists had hypothesized the possibility of a large ninth planet in the solar system just beyond the Kuiper belt. Most believed it to be an ice giant between ten and twenty Earth masses, but when it was finally discovered in 2080, there turned out to be two smaller planets orbiting each other. The larger of the two was named Erebus, after the primordial deity of darkness who existed before the Olympians, while the smaller planet was named Nyx, the sister of Erebus and goddess of night. The system was called: Tartarus.

The year is now 2181, and humanity has moved out into the solar system to establish mining outposts, colonies, and research stations as far out as Jupiter. The first crewed mission has just arrived in the Tartarus system after spending almost a year and a half traversing the unimaginable void of space to get there.

The crew’s objectives are simple. Perform a detailed survey of the system and establish possible resource claims on the surface of Nyx.

They never suspected that someone might be waiting for them.

The Tartarus Intercept is a Call of Cthulhu scenario that blends hard science fiction with cosmic horror. It includes deck plans of the CCS Orpheus, maps, more than a dozen handouts, new skills, new equipment, new science, and six pre-generated characters.

How long does this adventure take? I'm looking for a one-shot for my Halloween party and this sounds interesting.

During play tests we averaged one or two sessions. As always, much depends on what the PCs do, but it can be done. If you're interested in a good Halloween game, might I suggest Carnival of Madness which is intended to be done in a one-shot. Either way, have fun!

We have another one in the works called Terror on Aeneas, which takes place on a station high in the clouds of Venus. Whether we do more or not will depend on how well these are received.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
