By Al Smith, author of the Electrum Best-Selling Call of Cthulhu adventure Field of Screams.

Original art by John Sumrow and Pat Gehman.

In modern Aylesbury, Massachusetts. a group of military veterans have wonderful lives. They have careers, marriages, families, and children. They left everything bad that has ever befallen them in the past, where it belongs. But now, a strange woman is watching them. She has been for some time. They just haven't noticed. You probably don't remember her, but she remembers them... and she is going to take everything that they have... starting with that nice little family...

Cursed is an introductory scenario for Keepers and investigators interested in modern day adventures and “family” horror, like The Ring, Hereditary, Us, Midsommar, The Babadook, or The Witch, while also serving as a sort of sequel to the HP Lovecraft classic The Dunwich Horror.

This product contains 40 pages in total, including a full size page of original art by John Sumrow, 13 original NPC portraits by Pat Gehman, 4 pre-generated investigators, and extensive Keeper support and NPC worksheets to help Keepers manage the adventure.

This scenario contains the potential for harm to befall children and may not be suitable for all readers and groups, please use your discretion.

I'd like to know from the author of this if it would be good for new players and/or new Keepers.

For anyone who has been a player or Keeper of this, would you consider it beginner-friendly?

Thanks for any insight!

Thanks for the questions, Joanna! As the author, hopefully I can help.

I did not write this with the intention that it would be used for beginner keepers. But if you want to ruin it I encourage you to do so. As a modern adventure, it's not the "typical" Call of Cthulhu scenario, so it does not introduce the investigators to the setting of the 1920s. It's also somewhat of a downer scenario. However, many players may like this. I have had many veteran players call this scenario unique and something they had not done before, so it won't introduce them to what a "typical" Call of Cthulhu scenario is like.

As for beginning Keepers, it's not as friendly to new Keepers as say, the Starter Set or Doorways to Darkness. The investigation is somewhat of a sandbox, and the "scenes" rarely follow a linear path as the investigators decide on different things to do. That said, the ending likely goes to one or two conclusions, which is easier for the Keeper to improvise...See more

I really think you should check the spelling of your answer, Mr. S. Unless you mean it as written.
Personally I may want to "run" it, but not "ruin" it.
But I would also prefer a scenario not meant for beginners not being called an introductory one.

The idea sounds intriguing.

Sorry about the typo! I meant "run."

By "introductory," I meant that I wrote it so that it could introduce RPG groups that are unaccustomed to playing in the modern day or to family horror to those styles of adventures. I would distinguish that from "beginner" scenarios, which are for players or GMs new to Call of Cthulhu or roleplaying in general, which I did not write it for.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
