Anthems of War Core Rulebook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to Anthems of War, a bring your own miniatures fantasy skirmish game. Your battles are the stories told by rival bards in a tavern. You not only control the forces on the field but also play the role of the bard, embellishing the story as you play. Maybe a fog bank rolls in, keeping your rogue's flanking attack concealed. What if that common soldier steps up to lead your forces after his commander is consumed by a wall of flame? Wouldn't it be a shame if a sudden downpour wet the strings of an elven ranger's bow just before she was about to fire a shot? With these narrative elements, no battle will ever be the same.

Anthems of War is a fantasy miniatures skirmish game designed to be played head to head by two players. Designed to be played with 15mm, 28mm, or 32mm miniatures, players move their characters on the battlefield, roll dice and try to get the upper hand against their opponents using a variety of different scenarios and goals.

Scenarios can be used to represent single conflicts or they can be linked together in an overarching campaign. With a system that introduces narrative elements to the gameplay and the ability to create any characters you can dream up no two scenarios ever play quite the same.

Came here from GMG. This looks great, army creation very close to the way I like to write rules, but to take over the skirmish niche it desperately needs a real campaign system with territories, exploration, random discoveries etc.

Also, enabling print on demand in DriveThrouRPG too will make it more accessible to European peeps as this site has a printing hub in the UK.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm working on a solo campaign to complement the freeform campaign in the back of the book. I've also got a few head to head campaigns with territory control and resource management planned for further down the road.

My print on demand supplier also has print hubs all around the globe and they had the ideal combo of shipping locations and price for the project. I went with them because of the quality of the book they produce is also fantastic. The blurb Canada link on the Anthems of War website will eventually redirect you to the appropriate regional version of the store but you can also replace the .ca url with .co.uk to get the UK storefront

This looks really cool and different, it has vibes similar to frostgrave and four against darkness... I'm not saying it is either of those things, but if the combat is fluid enough, it might be a useful system to substitute mass battles in an RPG campaign. I think this would be a killer way to have your PCs meet, basically recreate Normandy, and your PCs are fighting "Nazi" Orcs (but without using real-world terminology) and they are the ones that survive. Man, that would be great! I'm adding this to my wishlist! Translate the surviving characters into an RPG system (or just use this)!

This ruleset actually got its start when I wanted to add mass battles to the D&D campaign I was running. It has evolved a lot since then and is more skirmish sized but the DNA is still there!

OMG I KNEW IT! Could you do a youtube thing, similar to "Me, Myself, and Die: does with "5 Parsecs from home", just to see this beauty in action? Maybe post it here?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
