Sacrifice - An Incense & Iron RPG - Basic Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

-- THIS IS THE BASIC EDITION! YOU CAN FIND THE FULL, BRANDED EDITION HERE --

Sacrifice is a Role-Playing Game based on the D20 system. This means it’s compatible with most, if not all, other D20 retro-clones and published material, new and old. In Sacrifice, you play as a Branded, a character that has been marked for demonic sacrifice. Somehow, you escaped the sinister ritual alive, but you are now chased both by demons and the all-powerful Inquisition.

As a Branded, you are no ordinary mortal. You have escaped certain death, and while the forces of evil are powerful, as is the Holy Church and its Inquisition, so is your will to live. Your determination and resilience in the face of certain death sets you apart from the common man, nothing else. What some deem supernatural abilities you know well is just a combination of experience, determination, and sometimes, pure luck. Or is it?

In Sacrifice, you explore the devastated No Man’s Land, a large swath of land between the Kingdom of Pavaria and the Cadaennor Dominion that has fallen into chaos due to the countries’ ongoing conflict. You’re far from alone here though: soldiers from both factions, commoners, mercenary bands, inquisitors, heretics, bandits, beasts, and demons all walk this land, some of them even making a home out of it. Will you find what you search for here?

Sacrifice Features:

  • An OSR D20 ruleset fully compatible with all other retroclones

  • A classless character creation system, complete with skills, feats and much more

  • As a Branded, your character is above average, capable of dealing with many opponents at once and surviving what would be certain death for others. This makes Sacrifice ideal for 1-on-1 play (one GM, one PC), although standard group play is of course possible

  • Interesting and rich combat, with critical hit and fumble tables, morale rules, exciting Combat Maneuvers, and more

  • A feudal, human-centric ruthless world with no magic but full of demonic evil and corrupted institutions

  • Detailed travel and hex-based exploration rules, with encounter tables that change depending on the current hex’s situation: is there a battle going on? Is it a war-torn, devastated place? Is it one of the few untouched corners left in No Man’s Land? Or perhaps you found a pocket of civilization? All these affect what you can expect to find in a hex

  • The No Man’s Land setting, strongly influenced by Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, complete with gear lists, bestiary, and a gazetteer

Hi,
I have a few stupid questions:

1) When are you proficient in a skill? Is the condition having a minimum of +1 for the skill? In that case, you would always get advantage for all the three starting skills (with the exception of Survival for Camping apparently).

2) Does the skill modifier incorporate the ability modifier? I assume it does, but unless I am missing some important part, the rules do not mention that. I think rules as written, ability modifiers are only applied to ability checks.

3) Am I correct that the Mastery Die applies when "your" level is above the opponents number of hit dice? The way it is worded, the mastery die applies when "their" (the opponent's) level is above the number of hit dice. Since I find no mention of enemy levels, I assume that is not intended.

4) Is the intention behind the visored helm that you can basically switch the advantages and disadvantages on and off by putting the visor up or down?

No questions are stupid! Let's see if I can help, I understand your confusion:
- You can only gain Proficiency via leveling up (at levels 4, 8, and 12), or by getting the "Capable" feat.
- Yes, Skills are modified by the Ability associated with them, that's why each Skill has clearly marked which Ability they're associated with.
- That's an unfortunate wording from my side, it should say "your" level, instead of "their", apologies for the confusion! So yeah, if the enemy has HD lower than your character's level, you can use Mastery.
- I guess that's open to interpretation, but the way I play it is that those helms are too closed to really allow for much visibility, hence the larger penalty, and it's a fixed one.

I see one of the companions has POD are you planning on that for the main rules?

For some reason the PoD option had been delisted, it should be working now. Thanks for letting me know!

On L.F.'s webstore, one of Sacrifice's features states: "GM-less Rules & Tools – a small bonus zine featuring solo playing resources to experience Sacrifice without a GM". Is this included in the Dtrpg release? Are these resources of your own design or from pre-existing creations of other people?
Thanks!

Hello, the extra material found in LF OSR's edition is not available anywhere else for now, but it will be part of the upcoming expansion. It's all my own stuff but it's obviously inspired by other GM-less tools, such as Mythic.

Not out of the box, I'm afraid. Fairly easy to do so with an oracle though, since it includes hex exploration rules and lots of random tables! I'm considering adding solo rules in the near future as a supplement, we'll see!

I was also interested in the solo play.
BTW, I'm having a blast with four against the darkness that plays really well in solo. I would like to see an OSR game like sacrifice that has a similar system to create dungeon crawk/world exploration without an oracle. 4AD has a simple dungeon crawl mechanics, and after that they release pre-made adventure with random tables that works really well.

I'm familiar with 4AD, it's a great game! Sacrifice is far from a dungeon crawler though, as it doesn't really suit the setting. I'm working on a new, extensive solo game that does feature random dungeon creation tools though.

It's compatible to a BX (OSR) or a d20 system (post 3.5)???

It's kind of an AD&D 2e and D&D 5e hybrid. Character options are very 5e, but most of the mechanics and all the bestiary stats are pure AD&D 2e (no THAC0 or descending AC, though). Overall it's closer to BX I'd say, though.

Agreed, especially because OSR and the D20 system are two very different things.

It should be working now. In any case, you can download the full character creation rules from the Blackoath Entertainment website.
Aside from the additions and a few changes, the stats are compatible with AD&D and therefore with any retroclone based on that version of D&D. You don't really need to make any conversions to monster stats if you're using OSE, Basic Fantasy, or any other similar system. The changes are mostly player-faced, the underlying mechanics are the same ones we're all used to.

It's not supposed to be, no. I put the first 18 pages as a preview, not sure why this isn't working. Will try to fix it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
