Horror in the House of Mystique aka All About Non-Standard Adventures - Game Masters’ edition

A new legend is making its way around the city.  Some failed adventurers are claiming that they have seen an emerald that is the size of a halfling’s chest.  Not just some raw rock, but a cut, jewelry grade emerald.  A gem destined to be the stuff of legends.

And the guy who saw it is willing to show anyone interested the way, as long as they agree to try and save his buddy who got left behind.  Seems like good pay!  Millions in gem wealth just to rescue somebody.  No adventurer is going to turn that down!  But it’s time to move.  You can’t wait for some other party to get there first.  Of course, it will be dangerous, but the pay day on this one is more than you have ever received before.

Looking for some old school style adventuring?  You know - The kind inside dungeons, where the exploration was still part of the fun?  Looking to find challenge in the monster enemies, the traps, and how it all fits together into a mission that makes some sense?  Looking for ideas and inspiration that will get you excited about being a game master again?  Yep, you found it!

Horror in the House of Mystique is a restoration of the sixth adventure module Board Enterprises published back in the early days.  Out of print for years, we are bringing it back, but this is a far better version of an already cool quest.  Not only have we gone through the mission itself and added commentary about how to make the encounters work (meaning work easier for a game master), but we’re giving far clearer descriptions of the enemies, the environment, and stuff / loot.

Probably more important to many of you, this mission now contains the enemies in both Legend Quest and die-20 stats.  We know that not all of you play by our rules, so we’ve included the stat blocks that will allow you to run this mission in our rules, die-20 rules, or your home grown.  After all, quests are about a whole lot more than just how many points it takes to kill the monsters - there needs to be some story, a setting, and most of all strategies.

But this isn’t just an adventure!  We’ve put Horror in the House of Mystique inside one of our Small Bites editions.  That means you’ll get the mission, but also world building ideas, the setting outside the dungeon, story ideas, new magic items, and all the rest!  Is there more?  Of course, there is!  We have also released a free version - the World Walker edition.  If you want to run this mission, you can tell your players to download the free version and it will give them notes they need about the setting, without revealing anything about the mission itself.  See, we even took care of the exposition section for you, so you can get right into the gaming when everyone shows up.

One last “but wait there’s more”:  As many of you already know, Horror in the House of Mystique is a part of our massive campaign setting The Endless Dungeon.  From here your party can go on to bigger and tougher missions, until they are ready to challenge one of the toughest adventures of them all.  But this, like the others, has a fully designed start if you decide not to use it as part of the quest chain.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
