Princess Guard

Princess Guard is an ENNIE-nominated role-playing game of magical adventure starring magical princesses and their spirit companions.

2023 Ennies Nominee

In Princess Guard, you play a magical princess from one of the royal realms of the Floating Islands of Orthavia. You’ll team up with your fellow princesses to explore new lands, defend your realm, help your people, tend to the spirits, visit other realms, and rescue travelers in distress.

On these missions, you’ll fight ferocious foes, discover amazing treasures, and meet wonderful people. You’ll grow by trying new things and learning from your mistakes. Your friends will always be there to help, so the only way to fail as part of the Princess Guard is not to try.

In this game book, you’ll find a short introduction to the Floating Islands, a quick and easy guide to creating your princess, and 18 detailed missions for your princess to undertake. It is written to be accessible to early readers and also provides tips for grown-ups to help facilitate play.

Princess Guard uses the action-oriented VRBS system that rewards creativity, heroism, and teamwork. It requires a single six-sided die and is easy enough for a six-year old to master.

Awesome game! My kid (4.5yo) and I had a blast playing this together, and I loved the premade adventures that came with the system document - they were perfect plothooks for a game with kids. I highly recommend, and I've got a review here if you want more detail!

Would it be a good game to try and simulate a She-Ra type game? My oldest (8) has started watching the newer cartoon for the 4th time, so I was looking into something like that. Plus, who doesn't like sky islands?

Are you required to play a female character in this game?

This whole thing sounds incredibly sexist. Just because it's excluding boys doesn't mean it isn't sexism.

Hi Patrick,

Not at all! The game is intended to be very inclusive, so in the very beginning, I write:

"There are boy princesses and girl princesses and princesses who don't exclusively identify as either. There are tall princesses and short princesses and thin princesses and thick princesses and princesses with brown skin and white skin and every shade of skin in-between. There are princesses with long hair and short hair and curly hair and straight hair and braids and beads and bows — and princesses with no hair at all.

There are princesses who wear glasses, princesses who ride in wheelchairs, and princesses who have trouble sitting still. There are princesses who play sports, who dance, who sing, who read and build. There are princesses who like to climb trees and princesses who prefer to keep their feet on the ground. There are princesses who love, love, love to get muddy. There are princesses who love, love, love to dress fancy. And there are plenty of princesses...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
