100 Derelict and Wrecked Spaceships to Encounter

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Space can be dangerous, and ships that venture into the void can fall foul of many different things. This supplement has 100 spaceships for characters to encounter, from apparently undamaged ships floating in space, to fragmentary wreckage scattered over a wide area. In some cases, it's obvious what happened, and may still be happening; in others, it may never be discovered. The ships can be used to flesh out a space journey or as potential adventure hooks.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Intact ship that is drifting, though it still appears to have power. No lifesigns can be detected onboard. The hatches still function and the ship can be entered. Inside, the corpses of those onboard can eb found in various places, from at their station to in their quarters; it looks as if they were rapidly struck down by an illness.
  • Irregularly shaped conglomeration of ice with an unusually high metallic signature according to sensors. On investigation, the iceteroid proves to have formed around a starship, completely engulfing it.
  • Metal fragments can be detected spread across the surface of a large asteroid. On closer examination, they prove to be parts of a ship that appears to have hit the asteroid at speed. Most of the ship is in small fragments, spread over a wide area, though it looks like some pieces spiralled off into space on impact.
  • Modular cargo ship which would normally have a number of holds attached to the central spine. All of the cargo holds have been removed, cut off it looks like, and several items drifting near the ship are the spaced crew.
  • Odd ship with a peculiarly organic appearance, as if it was grown, not made. Inside, the structure gives the impression of being inside a living creature, but nothing else alive can be found within. The instruments are similarly organic in appearance, and the ship's systems still appear to have power.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
