The Role Playing DB is a program that replaces the typical 'messy' loose-leaf notebook typically used by Role Playing gamers to keep track of their characters, spells, monsters, tricks, traps, and worlds. The Role Playing DB implements a user-friendly GUI that presents representations of character, monster, spell etc. sheets as well as maps, using both hex and square spaces on the screen and saves the information on these sheets and maps as computer files that can be transfered via email, cloud storage, or USB thumb drives. Printouts can also be generated, for those that insist on paper copies.

Version 3 is specificly designed to work with any game system using a template system.  Be sure to read the included documentation.

I've encountered several errors while trying to create a map:

Hi, I'm having trouble running the application, when I double click on it, it reads: "FindresourceW() failed for buttons bitmap resource, resources in tk_base.rc must be linked into Tk dll or static executable." And it won't start at all.

If the publisher is not checking comments in this section, and therefore there is no support, I will have to ask for a refund; I am disappointed, the features it supposedly offered seemed interesting.

I just rebuilt it using a different tclkit. I think this version should work (it does under Wine64 on my Linux machine).

Thanks, although I have already obtained a refund a few days back, this might be helpful for future customers, so that they do not experience the same issue.

Edit map does work, so I'll check the manual to see if I'm doing something wrong.

OK, I found the problem -- there is some MS-Windows-ism somewhere in the depths of the MS-Windows port of Tcl. I put a catch around the problem code and provided a work around. I'll be uploading fixed versions shortly.

Although saving now works, I noticed that the character sheet/template has the Race, Class and Gender fields locked/greyed out, every time you load the file. There's no problem when you first create the character, but it is always locked once you load it.

That is intentional -- it is how I created the template. Normally Race, Class and Gender don't change once set. Those fields are defined as 'updatable=no' in the template. You *could* change things in the template file to make them updatable=yes, if that makes sense with your rule system. Or you could create a "transgender" or "transrace" or "transclass" type of character template.

Note: the included template file (dnd.rpgtmpl) is only a "sample" and is not complete. You will probably want to create your own template file, that would would for your rule system, etc.

I see, I thought it was an error because sometimes polymorph type of effects can change the character's Race and Gender.

I based the templates I created on the *old* AD&D books that I had at the time. I don't they had any polymorph effects defined. There is no reason not to create a fresh set of templates that would support polymorph effects (or really any other features you might want).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
