When you go out in the woods today, you’d better go in disguise…

A Plant-Themed Monstrous Compendium for Tiny Dungeon: Second Edition

Happy Spring! — Now go plant a tree!

What is Happy Spring 2022 (besides a shameless holiday-themed money grab)? Why, it’s only the best time of year to be a plant! Well, especially a plant-themed monster.

Here in Happy Spring 2022, we have a tongue-in-cheek “preview” of three examples of the types of monsters we plan to include in a forthcoming full bestiary for Tiny Dungeons: Second Edition called Bestiarum Vocabulum. The three plant-themed beasts are:

Dreadwood Dreadwood is petrified wood given a new, horrific life, thanks to the efforts of a reclusive sorcerer who really, really hated having his forest sanctum disturbed by pyromaniac adventurers. When inert, the dreadwood resembles a petrified tree stump or stalagmite, but when suitable food — that is, anything animal or vegetable — draws near it can ambush its prey by snaring them with its tentacles. Entrapped victims are then dragged to the dreadwood’s toothy maw. Despite their toughness, considerable strength, and ability to strike without warning, dreadwood are relatively easy to avoid as they are unable to uproot themselves and move about. It is said that the stony bark of the dreadwood is a valuable alchemical ingredient, but harvesting it in any great quantity is a risky venture at best.

Nirissid On first inspection, you might assume the lean form of the nirissid is a genuine sculpture, placed by some coy artist in the heart of the forest to be discovered by happenstance. Watch closely. With patience and luck, you might hear the nirissid’s bark-like flesh creak or the leaves on its head rustle, as its limbs shift ever so gradually into a new position. Unlike the kinds of fey that leap or bound for fun, the nirissid delights in the expression of form through tranquility and poise. Over days or weeks, it will stay in one place, and anyone who remains for that long might notice the nirissid’s motions are far from random: this creature is a storyteller and performance artist, and believes the best tales deserve to be appreciated over time. Be careful, though, as it’s easy to become a captive, mesmerized audience without realizing.

Snapperpod First cataloged in the remotest jungles by the famed botanist, Ziimor Khaalben, the snapperpod is a prolific, carnivorous plant with a decidedly predatory bent. Unlike its far smaller — and generally less dangerous — flytrap cousins, snapperpods are able to launch their toothed maws at potential prey in a lightning strike, often killing them outright with their vicious bite. Digestion is slow but certain, and within a day there is often no trace, aside from dried blood or random scraps of the meal. Although snapperpods can digest almost anything, certain precious metals will pass through and be excreted in granular form through their extensive root system. Established groves of snapperpods are said to have considerable deposits beneath them — although recovering them may pose a challenge.

Tiny Dungeon: Second Edition is a popular minimalist fantasy tabletop roleplaying game that aims for the kind of sword and sorcery setting of popular media like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Released by Gallant Knight Games, it’s an ideal for fast and easy fantasy gaming.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
