From the tabletop madness of DM SCOTTY crawls EZD6!

A rules-light D6 RPG system that puts creativity over complexity, but delivers a suprising amount of variation and mechanical wiggle.

Hey guys it's Hankerin from Runehammer. I have been in the DM Scotty cult for years. He's a great guy, and has a trillion hours at the table. All that creativity and table time really shines in this core book. You can just feel the Scotty-ness. So when this project came across my anvil, I had to throw down my best efforts!

That's when I found Sean Bova, who arted this book with such brilliance.

Here's what you can expect:

-EZD6 Core rules: D6 dice pooling with a few key innovations like boons and banes, strikes instead of hit points and variable damage, and a fun player micro-resource called karma.

-9 Hero Paths: Scotty cooks the classics with his own spices. Each hero path is nicely separate from the next, with key roles to give you that MVP feeling in your group.

-20 classic monsters, 20 crazy ones: This is my favorite section of the book. Placing emphasis on a monster's narrative specialities, rather than numeric, seems too open-ended, but these horrors just nail it. The entries are tight enough to play cold, but weird enough to mod and enjoy from memory.

-Tables: No RPG is complete without random ways to select baddies, treasures, NPC names, lair details, story twists, and more. We got those covered.

Then there's me.. Runehammer.

I can't wait for y'all to dive in to EZD6. Now go forth and roll!

A Note on EZD6 by Professor Dungeonmaster of Dungeoncraft...

The vermin stepped through a hole in the basement wall, skulking and sniffing. I leaped out and buried my axe in one’s skull. The thief skewered another from behind. The mage torched another, filling the air with the smell of burning rat hair…

That’s how I met DM Scotty. I had seen him, of course, on the DM’s craft, making purple worms out of toilet paper rolls and dungeonscapes out of corrugated cardboard. His YouTube channel, The DM’s Craft, was (and still is!) one of the inspirations for my own, and when he invited me to game with him over Zoom, I jumped at the chance—not just because he’s one of my YouTube idols, but because he was going to run his top-secret EZD6 system.

Some folks say you shouldn’t meet your idols—that it’s often a disappointing experience. But Scotty was just as enthusiastic and gregarious as he is onscreen, and EZD6 was even cooler than I could have imagined! When I received the beta rules, I was blown away. Within 10 minutes I completely understood the system and created a completely original, detailed character. Pretty soon my playtest group were furiously hacking our way through a sewer filled with rat men.

EZD6 is immediately understandable to experienced gamers and accessible to new ones. You never need to stop to look up rules—everything is right there on your character sheet. Spells can be created on the spot. Karma and hero dice allow players lots of choices. Exploding dice mean you can potentially kill anything—and monsters can kill you.

To my mind, the fast, elegant EZd6 rules allow the game to be more immersive and intuitive—more like watching a movie than playing a TTRPG. So, grab a handful of d6s and let the fun begin!

Hey there. 2 questions:
1. Is there a Discord, FB group, or anything else devoted to EZD6? Would be cool to chat with others and share ideas.
2. I want to buy the hardcover, but when reading the PDF I noticed some errors (grammar, spelling, etc) and am wondering if there will be an updated file? I would prefer to buy it *after* corrections are made (if they will be).

I realize we can all homebrew this game to our liking. Never-the-less, I’ve been considering your response on the Fire Elementalist situation and would appreciate your thoughts on my alternative opinion for resolution below. There may or may not be things I failed to consider but that’s why I like to hear from others.

If a Fire Elementalist is about to face Fiery Terrain, a Fire Elemental, or Red Dragon (all impervious to fire attacks) and is not currently under duress and has time to prep before doing so. Why not just allow them to cast a Protection from Fire Spell with NO roll? However, they would have to anchor the spell with a bane to perform anything else but maintain it. In the rulebook that is what happens to those who are on fire attempting to do anything else. This is not a permanent ability, only lasts one scene, and doesn't nerf the caster from using their main powers. In my humble opinion, to do otherwise would render the character useless from their primary ability of manipulating...See more

That sounds reasonable. My reasoning is total fire protection is a biggie in that scene. This gives the player a choice. Protect the group or cast spells in other ways. They could always drop the protection at some point and cast another spell. I would have them roll to cast the protection because it is a continuing effect and not a minor or short-term help. With a successful cast, the conjurer could keep the protection up with spell anchoring for a whole adventure. EZD6 is a mindset as well as a ruleset and is your game now. Run what feels reasonable to you. (I am just saying this is how I would do it). Happy gaming Jason.

I really want to thank you for your insight on this. I didn't consider the long term effect of the spell thinking it would only be good for the scene at hand. I agree and believe at some point the caster would need to roll again to maintain the spell or perhaps limit it to one strike per character affected and then a re-roll needed or something like that. Anyway, I now see why you would do it your way and it makes much more sense. This is easily the best RPG in my library.

Absolutely love this game!
Just a few questions for clarification if you don’t mind.

Wraith - 1 cursed weapon attack, bypasses armor.

1 - Does this require a to-hit roll from the Wraith?
2 - Does this reduce Armor Save to 6 or no Armor Save?
3 – Does this attack do only 1 Strike or can this weapon Crit?

Wraith - Life drain bypasses armor, make a miraculous save to avoid.

1 - Is this a ranged attack?
2 - There are no Magical Ability Dice listed like a Dragon or Medusa on stats. Does this require a to-hit or magic roll from Wraith?
3 - If Miraculous Save fails does Life Drain instantly kill, do only 1 Strike, or can it Crit?
4 - Does Life Drain restore a Strike or Strikes to the Wraith if successful?

If a Conjurer - Fire Elementalist.

1 - Casts a spell to make herself and her 3 friends fireproof for the scene how what rolls would be required on willing participants, and can they become completely...See more

So glad you are enjoying it.

Wraith rolls to hit (melee) hero 3+ bypasses armor, so the hero must make a miraculous save instead. (it can crit)
It will not give the wraith strikes but for a particularly nasty one you could give it that ability.

Mystic barrier is only something the conjurer can use ( can not be cast on others)

As far as rituals go, that would be the Judgment of the RR. I would make components hard to get. (and take lots of effort and time)

I would allow the resistance spell but keep a few things in mind. The resistance would require overcoming 4D6 on a spell roll. It would also require anchoring so no other spells could be cast. To keep the conjurer from just recasting the spell over and over till they get it I would say if the spell fails. That the mystic energies are not powerful enough to invoke that spell.

You could bless everyone before combat but specify what you are asking for. (remember, you can only ask for one miracle...See more

Sorry, that is a bit confusing. It is a placeholder telling a player to use an aspect to choose a craft instead of an inclination.

Heavy armour and a shield let you roll 3+ to save vs damage. Heavy armour no shield is 4+, Medium 5+, Light 6.
What happens if, during the course of the story, a character is deprived of their armour?
I'm thinking either no roll to save, or roll 6 with a Bane...

I hate asking so many questions, but I would like to clarify something:
When rolling a 6 in combat, you roll again to "confirm the crit." The book then says "Continue rolling one die for every consecutive
6 rolled inflict another strike." Assuming that we need to roll 4+ to hit the enemy, I can read this 3 different ways:

1. I roll, getting a 6. This inflicts 1 strike. I roll again and get a 5. This inflicts a second strike and it stops there because I need another 6 to roll a third time.
2. I roll a 6, inflicting 1 strike. I roll again and get a 5. I have only inflicted 1 strike and stop there because additional damage is only on consecutive 6s.
3. I roll a 6, inflicting 2 strikes. I roll again, only inflicting a 3rd strike on 6.

Number 1 seems the most likely and is what I assume to be the intended rule, but the mention of "every consecutive 6" makes it sound that only by rolling another 6 can you add the second strike.

No problem glad to help.
If you roll a 6 as your result, that’s a crit. You deal 1 strike and get to re-roll one die. If that re-roll is also a 6, then you deal another strike and get to re-roll again. As long as you keep rolling 6s, you keep dealing 1 extra strike, and keep re-rolling. EZD6, p12.

Really love the simplicity and how fast it is! It's also very hackable. Creating inclination or adding magic cis really simple. You can even let your player propose some if it fits your setting.

It also looks easy to make conversions. I play a lot of OSE, and it seems like the HD of monster is generally the nb of strikes and the AAC gives you an idea of how hard to hit (like AAC less than 10 = 2+, AAC 10-13=3+, AAC 14-17=4+, AAC 18-19=5+, AAC 20=6), more or less. Higher damage monster will have lower to hit #

Since there are a lot of great settings and modules in OSR and B/X, do you have some guidelines for stats conversion (I'm thinking Dolmenwood, The Stygian Library, Neverland and stuff like that)?

Do you have a mailing list or a Discord/Patreon to follow your development and exchange idea with other EZD6 enthusiasts? I'm already on your Youtube channel.

Anyway, thanks for this great book! Really enjoy it!

Questions:

Page 38 regarding Seers: " You also have precognition and can avoid any damaging attack on a 3+."
Is this a single roll to completely avoid the entire attack, or one roll per strike, as with armour?
Is this meant to allow the player to avoid one single attack per battle, or can they use it with each attack directed toward them?
If they fail this roll, do they still benefit from armour, or do they only have the precognition roll?

Can players make scrolls/ potions/ other objects?
Customer avatar
Scotty M July 23, 2022 4:28 am UTC

-Each strike like armor
-Seer precognition only works if you’re trying to avoid combat. You need to maintain a calm mind to use precognition. Inflicting intentional violence prevents that calmness of mind
-You can still benefit from armor (yes)
-A hero with the alchemist inclination can make a potion with enough downtime and resources (RR judgment)
-Scrolls would be similar, and I would have the player make an aspect like 'arcane scribe' if they wanted to do this.
-You can have them spend money or take time to acquire exotic ingredients, and I would not let them make more than one a downtime. Make it easier to quest and find potions and scrolls than to make. This keeps the game focused on fun and not 'gaming the system' for goodies.

Hello, great game, can't wait to try it.

1. How do traps work in the game? When a PC trips a trap (like a dart), does the trap roll 3+ to hit?
2. Does the PC armor absorb the hit from the Trap if it's a strike-type trap?
3. Does the PC use a Save type action to avoid it, or a challenge?
4. If it's a Fire-type trap with a jar of oil that falls on the PC, after the initial Hit is resolved, does the fire continue to "damage" the PC? Does it cause a full Strike or require a save or Armor save or task to put it out. I guess I'm not should how "being on fire" works mechanically.

Thanks!

Traps-For dart or 'attack' type traps (I would go with 4+ to hit and make an armor save). For area effects like fire or poison gas, use the miraculous save. Poison does an extra strike (miraculous save on your next turn or take the strike). Fire continues to burn till put out (miraculous save). If a hero stop dropped and rolled as a move action, give them a boon to the miraculous save. If they jump in the water, just have it go out.

Magick Follow-up Question:

1. Are conjurers restricted to only using spells within their chosen sphere or can they try to do any task with magic, maybe at the highest DC or with a bane, like Harry Potter style. Examples: repair an item, create Light or even heal a wound?
2. Could a Miracle be used to heal?

3) Conjurers and the circles of sorcery: can a conjurer only cast spells flavored around their circle (so to speak), or can they cast spells of any sort, receiving a boon if it's flavored towards their chosen circle?

1) I would keep it within the circle of sorcery (keeps magick from becoming a win button). Miracles can heal but only once a scene and only one strike. Start difficulty at 3D6 and max out at six targets at 6D6.

Yesterday we played for a first time. It went smoothly but few more questions arose.
1st can players ever roll more than 3d6?
2nd can player apply 2 boons to a single test? E.g. I am warrior and have rider aspect. If fighting from horse back will I get another d6 when attacking from horse back?
3rd If not speaking about magic is there any other situation where player can roll 3d6 expect for assist from another character (that is related to question above)?
4rth If character fails armor save can he still try miraculous save?
5th if one character has Danger Sense and party is surprised how does this work? He goes first, then enemies then rest of the party?
6th how does surprise work in general? Does it apply to whole combat or only first round of the combat?
7th contest rules. Do I get it correct that draw means that both sides are still struggling and no victor is given? What if GM and player both roll 6? Who wins? still stalemate?

1) yep boons stack
2) yep
3)I would just go with 1D6. If a player wants more, have the skilled hero do the task.
4)No, armor saves are for combat...Miraculous saves are for extraordinary events like grabbing a ledge before falling or avoiding falling rocks.
5)Yep
6)Just the first round of combat.
7) That is correct, still a stalemate.

Sir you are a miracle worker.

Can you please confirm one example for me?
If I am a warrior with boon for melee and I am riding a horse with aspect as a rider (generally playing knight) and want to hit an orc that is grappled by my companion with a whip (e.g. his way of assisting me) I will roll to hit on 4d6. My roll is 6 6 6 and 1. Even with so many sixes I hit only once (taking the highest number) and will roll single d6 for critical. I rolled on critical 3. That would be enough for a hit but not enough for a crit thus this whole action will end up with orc taking a single strike. is that correct?

When you get a 6 (no matter how many dice you have in your pool) you do a strike and have the potential to "confirm" a crit (another strike). You only roll one die and if you get another 6 you do a second strike and can continue to roll one die until you no longer get a 6. You can also boost rolls with karma so if you roll a 4 to confirm a crit you can spend 2 karma to make it a 6 and keep rolling.

Nope, armor saves are set with no modification (boon or Bane) but can be boosted with Karma. Need a 5+, roll a 4, use one karma and you make your save and negate one strike. Must roll for every strike you take.

I just bought this and have read about 50 pages of the pdf. This is enough reading for me to just say wow. This is THE game I have been looking for, the one I wish I had created. I teach English as a second language and use ttrpgs for certain lessons or more in depth "English camps." I have used Basic D&D, Mausritter, aspects of Dungeon World...and I am sure other systems all in trying to find a simple yet fun system that lends itself to learning without rules bloat and confusion. Just the character sheet for this game alone makes me happy. This D6 system is so elegant and intuitive I know it will work perfectly for my purposes. Also, the magick system is genius! Your player essentially makes it up on the fly...I cannot wait to see what my young learners come up with lol. Scotty man, hats off. For 25$ you just made my job a heck of a lot easier. 10/10

I got the chance to test this with 3 classes today. They loved it. They said they liked it because it is easier than systems I usually use (teaching the rules for even Basic D&D is challenging for ESL kids) and because they loved the magic system. I spent the rest of my afternoon making a power point to explain the rules for my upcoming English camp. No more confusing polyhedral dice for the kids, no more weak magic or magic systems...just straight fun. I will be buying any additional books you and Runehammer put out for EZ D6. Do you have plans for a copy of the book that is not pod? Pod is ok but we all know stitched binding is far better. Thanks again.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
