From the tabletop madness of DM SCOTTY crawls EZD6!

A rules-light D6 RPG system that puts creativity over complexity, but delivers a suprising amount of variation and mechanical wiggle.

Hey guys it's Hankerin from Runehammer. I have been in the DM Scotty cult for years. He's a great guy, and has a trillion hours at the table. All that creativity and table time really shines in this core book. You can just feel the Scotty-ness. So when this project came across my anvil, I had to throw down my best efforts!

That's when I found Sean Bova, who arted this book with such brilliance.

Here's what you can expect:

-EZD6 Core rules: D6 dice pooling with a few key innovations like boons and banes, strikes instead of hit points and variable damage, and a fun player micro-resource called karma.

-9 Hero Paths: Scotty cooks the classics with his own spices. Each hero path is nicely separate from the next, with key roles to give you that MVP feeling in your group.

-20 classic monsters, 20 crazy ones: This is my favorite section of the book. Placing emphasis on a monster's narrative specialities, rather than numeric, seems too open-ended, but these horrors just nail it. The entries are tight enough to play cold, but weird enough to mod and enjoy from memory.

-Tables: No RPG is complete without random ways to select baddies, treasures, NPC names, lair details, story twists, and more. We got those covered.

Then there's me.. Runehammer.

I can't wait for y'all to dive in to EZD6. Now go forth and roll!

A Note on EZD6 by Professor Dungeonmaster of Dungeoncraft...

The vermin stepped through a hole in the basement wall, skulking and sniffing. I leaped out and buried my axe in one’s skull. The thief skewered another from behind. The mage torched another, filling the air with the smell of burning rat hair…

That’s how I met DM Scotty. I had seen him, of course, on the DM’s craft, making purple worms out of toilet paper rolls and dungeonscapes out of corrugated cardboard. His YouTube channel, The DM’s Craft, was (and still is!) one of the inspirations for my own, and when he invited me to game with him over Zoom, I jumped at the chance—not just because he’s one of my YouTube idols, but because he was going to run his top-secret EZD6 system.

Some folks say you shouldn’t meet your idols—that it’s often a disappointing experience. But Scotty was just as enthusiastic and gregarious as he is onscreen, and EZD6 was even cooler than I could have imagined! When I received the beta rules, I was blown away. Within 10 minutes I completely understood the system and created a completely original, detailed character. Pretty soon my playtest group were furiously hacking our way through a sewer filled with rat men.

EZD6 is immediately understandable to experienced gamers and accessible to new ones. You never need to stop to look up rules—everything is right there on your character sheet. Spells can be created on the spot. Karma and hero dice allow players lots of choices. Exploding dice mean you can potentially kill anything—and monsters can kill you.

To my mind, the fast, elegant EZd6 rules allow the game to be more immersive and intuitive—more like watching a movie than playing a TTRPG. So, grab a handful of d6s and let the fun begin!

I'm looking at picking up the game but for supers rather than fantasy. The game looks hackable enough from video reviews. It appears magic representing versatile powers works wonders. Any potential pitfalls?

Wounds are mentioned in the book, but I couldn't find a definition in the book. What is a wound? Is it another word for damage already delt?

I would LOVE a deck of monsters and NPCs to use in play. I am also eagerly waiting to see what the community does with this system.

Just two questions about rolling a "1"..

1) On a normal (not magic) test: If you roll with boons and you have a one on one of the dice (like a 3,5 and 1) do you still automatically fail.
2) On a Casting test: If you roll a one and take the spellburn for it, do you automatically succed with the spell even if you dont have other dice or the other dice rolled poorly?

1-On a normal test you simply take the highest die in the pool and that is your roll. Ignore all the other dice.
2-On a casting roll you must also meet or beat the resistance # with one of the other die or the spell still fails. Spellburn only saves you if one of the other dice succeeded.

This is really awesome, though I screwed myself by ordering too hastily. I ordered the PDF because I went into "must have NOW!" mode when I should have bought the hardcover... which would have given me the PDF now... I hadn't really planned to effectively buy it twice, but I guess that's what is gonna happen. On the plus side, it lets me support the book twice, so...

Awesome book so far, though (I'm about 1/3 in). Anyone with doubts about it (which you shouldn't have if you've looked at any reviews) just go ahead and buy it.

Scotty, just saw Professor DM's review and I gotta say I'm intrigued. Looks great and it will probably play fantastic. Soon as I can I'll get me a print copy and put it in my review queue.

so i was super curious since the book launched and kept waiting for more info.

then see a hype video that explains nothing about the system and goes from "The best RPG ever! Does EVERYTHING perfect! Why it makes golden french fries, cures cancer, and is the secret to perfect parallel parking!" Then the guy in the video admits he has played only three times.

Nah, you folks do you, but seems extremely biased and the juvenile negative attitude toward other games totally unsold me. Absolute last thing Games (of any kind) need is another toxic fan base with a weird air of superiority.

HACK: So at our table we’ve combined the karma, miraculous saves and the hero die into a single mechanic, having a d6 “Luck die” on each players sheet, each time they are caught in a bad situation they can choose to test their luck and roll their die, like a catch-all saving throw, rolling under their Luck to succeed, or they can push their Luck during actions and combat to gain additional effect like adding a lucky boon die or reroll a failed die …but each time they test or push their luck the Luck die ticks down one pip, as their luck is gradually running out.

If they roll a 6 on any other test and “crit” then they’ve been lucky and increase their Luck die by one pip, or they might be awarded luck for good roleplaying.

Our table prefers the choice between saving throws to defy danger or holding their luck to gain advantage in combat and skill tests, whilst easily tracked on a single d6 die.

My Campaign Leveling System borrowed a bit from Space Gamer Magazine
Level 1 = 1 Mulligan – ie reroll any dice 1x in a Story (Adventure)

Level 3 = +1 more Mulligan

Level 5 = +2 more Mulligans

Level 7 = +1 more inclination

Level 9 = +2 more Mulligan + Gain a title and domain if char does not currently have one

Level 10 = All Rolls against character are at -1

Level 12 = All Rolls against character are at -2
To gain level at end of session players will argue with RR for Ignobles. All 9 of the Ignobles must be checked off to gain the next level. Can not check off Ignobles for next level until all checked off for current level. No forging ahead. The deeds must become ever greater and challenging.

Adventure / Travel /Intrigue
Bard’s Tale / Fame / Triumph
Battle / Military / Strategy
Crafty Deeds / Cunning Skill Use
Magic / Fathoming the Unknown
Desires Fulfilled / Profit...See more

There is no "leveling up" in the traditional sense in the game but there are suggestions for campaign play. I personally have run long campaigns that concentrate on story and not game mechanic gimmicks.

First off, this is easily my favorite rpg I have ever read in all my years of searching! I feel like DM Scotty looked into my soul and gave me everything I could ever want in an rpg, all in one book! I honestly can't believe how awesome this system is!

One quick question regarding the fighter/marksman inclinations. In both, it says "If you are already trained, you can't take this inclination." Does trained refer to hero paths? For example, are warriors unable to take the fighter inclination because they already have a boon in melee weapons?
Customer avatar
Scotty M June 23, 2022 2:52 am UTC
PURCHASER
Correct...But a Warrior could take the marksman inclination as they are only trained (have a boon) in melee.

Also glad I could fill that need for a compact and table-smart RPG. This is the game I had wished for and I got tired of waiting around and made my own. Many hours of play went into this to distill as much table fun as I possibly could.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
