Family is everything in the Appalachian Mountains. When everyone else turns their backs, they will be there, waiting. They may not like you. They may even hate you. But there is a loyalty to blood that runs deep in those black-soiled hollers.

Of Sorrow & Clay delves deep into the history of an old Moonshiner, Carson Taft, and his family. At the ripe old age of 89, he has gone missing in the deep forests of James Holler in Kentucky. Telling his neighbor Jack, that he is going to see his first wife, Sadie, who disappeared some 45 years earlier. Carson himself has now been missing a good few days, and Jack has gathered you all, Carson's family and friends, to help search the dark woods in hopes of finding the old fool.

Created for a one-shot special mini series presented and run by Ain't Slayed Nobody, with Cam Collins from The Old Gods of Appalachia and Becca Scott from The Calyx as guest players. Written by Graeme Patrick winner of Chaosium's 2019 Cult of Chaos writers competition.

Rolling Boxcars - Graeme Patrick’s Of Sorrow and Clay is a wonderfully written scenario that is both compelling and entirely plausible. The hollers of the Appalachian Mountains are a mysterious place, after all. Not all scenarios in the Miskatonic Repository are equal in story development and presentation, but Graeme has nailed both! This is one scenario that I highly recommend.

I recently was a player in this adventure. I thought it was very well written, and our group of 3 payers and a keeper really enjoyed it. I listend to it played online after the fact, seeing how they navigated the adventure was a blast. As a player, I would rate this as a 5 stars. I hope to run it myself in the future. I hope the author writes more adventures.

Not entirely sure how I feel about a woman wanting an abortion being killed and turned into a monster whose entire existence is then centered on giving birth. Like I get it’s dark, unpleasant stuff. But… I’m not crazy about the subtext here.

The only problem with the Ain't Slayed Nobody podcasts is they are too polished, too seamless. Some, if not all, of the sound effects are added in post production and that's ok. However, given the almost perfect interactions/reactions between the GM and the players, we are left with two choices. Either the cast are as their title implies--actors reading/ad libbing from their provided scripts--or the episodes are extremely, heavily edited by cuppycup.

To get a true sense of a scenario, I want to hear the 'actual play' in it's entirety, warts and all. I enjoy listening to the occasional rule check interruptions, all the player gaffs, GM snafu's, the pauses when the player is deciding what they want to do or when the GM is silently scanning a section so he doesn't mangle the upcoming encounter and the players are plotting/chatting in the background.

That’s fair criticism, and the style doesn’t appeal to everyone. It’s a combination of both things you said. The gameplay content is heavily edited to make interactions feel closer to audio drama than a night at the table. And some NPCs are replaced by scripted voice acting in post production. We have several video actual plays that are what you’re looking for but not for this scenario.

We (me and the wife) were early listeners... what was it, three, three and half years ago the podcasts started? We drifted away due the reasons mentioned above. The Scott Dorward episodes were fun to listen to. Thanks for the heads up on the video actual plays, we'll check those out!

Hey (presumably) cup!

Stumbled on this on a whim but I'll use it the opportunity to provide some feedback. When I got into Call of Cthulhu and started running it for friends that had never played before, we all became fans of Aint Slayed Nobody for the first season of Yall of Cthulhu. Every single one of the ~8 or so people I introduced it to stopped listening during the second season.

The consensus has been that the professional voice actors paired with regular players is just too jarring and distracting. An actual play / audio drama is a really cool concept, but it feels like it's lost what makes either of those things enjoyable in practice. The authentic charm of an AP is lost to the high production values, while the immersive nature of the audio drama is lost to the unscripted nature of an AP and the amateur voice acting by the players.

This is both a seriously great scenario and a brilliant subject for a starter party to tackle as it is a slickly written and well plotted one shot. Ideal for convention plays or as a starting point for new roleplayers it is short but brutal and has real claustrophobic settings. Graeme Patrick has created a really stunning scenario and i loved the Ain't Slayed Nobody play through with its star studded cast. Bloody awesome.
