A complete guide to running sandbox wilderness hex crawls for use with old-school table-top fantasy role-playing games! Made for OSR games, but easily adaptable to any old-school system.

What makes this title different from other hex crawl guides? This one is meant to be concise and easy to use/print for both prep and in-game. It's not so granular, with multiple sub-tables that span several pages. It strives to be less of a reference book, and more of a game-play tool. An aid for your own creativity instead of a tool to replace it. Everything is designed with the idea of printing out the pages and placing them in your GM notebook to use while gaming.

The original Word doc file is included for download, so you can change any of the tables to fit with your campaign!

It doesn't seems to include any hex key in the wilderness exploration section? Planning to use this once I learn how to run OSR

It's on page 14. On the right side of the page the wilderness turn is shown, and the left side is blank. That's where you write down the features on your map, like, "1. Green Dragon's Lair, 2. Cursed Magical Site, 3. Haunted Manor (ghosts)," etc. It should say "Hex Key" on the top left hand side of the page.

Ohhh I got confused, I thought hex key meant symbols for like the whole hex map and such like trees, ruins, strongholds, etc. Thanks!

Hi I'm wondering how you utilize the encounter tables. Are you meant to create your own tables and use the ones provided as sub tables? I'm curious when you would utilize the construct or dragon tables in your own game as they don't give an environment where you would use them.

The tables are the occupants of hex features. For random wilderness and dungeon encounters you are meant to use the tables from whatever game you are playing. The tables within are not split up by environment because the monsters don't necessarily have to live in the feature you rolled. They could be there searching for treasure, just passing through, or they could be imprisoned there, etc.

I think doing it this way is good for stoking creativity and feeding the emergent story that comes from playing a hex crawl. But you can always just use the wilderness tables from your base game if you'd rather not have monsters outside their normal environment. Thanks for the question!

I am a publisher on Drivethru so I can't leave a review. That said I seen this on a Hexed Press review on Youtube and was excited to pick it up! I feel that the author is underselling their product with the pay what you want. This is a very useful tool for hex creation! I suggest it to anyone who is looking to run a hex crawl game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
