"Breezy fun…. [Deadball] captures the spirit and feel of the sport." —Baseball Prospectus

"With Deadball you can simulate America’s Pastime during any season, no matter where you are." —Sports Illustrated Kids

Deadball: Baseball With Dice is a fast-paced baseball dice game that uses real statistics to bring the ballpark to your tabletop. Since it was first introduced in 2017, its elegantly simple rules have made it a hit with baseball fanatics and new fans alike, as thousands of players from around the world have used it to replay classic World Series, create dream teams, and design beautifully crafted fictional leagues. A 1-2 player game, Deadballtakes about 30 minutes to play and can star players from history, present day, or your own imagination.

Whatever you love about baseball, Deadball will bring it to life.

This book, which replaces both the original Deadball: Baseball With Dice and Deadball: 1909, contains everything you need to play the game, including:

  • Complete rules for the game’s Modern and Ancient eras, allowing you to recreate games played any time from 1900 to today.
  • Instructions for team generation using real or fictional players.
  • Updated rosters and player descriptions for the legendary Southern Circuit, an eight team league of misfits and eccentrics whose story is being told in 2022 and 1913.
  • Two new campaigns for Nine Game Pennant, a fast-paced mini-campaign that drops you right into the heart of the fight for the Southern Circuit title.
  • All the digital supplements you need to get going, including blank scoresheets and the invaluable quick reference guide.
Guide to the core mechanics of Deadball: Baseball With Dice, introducing the d100 roll for Batter Target that determines the result of every at bat.

What About the Other Deadball Books?

This rulebook is fully compatible with past expansions for Deadball, all of which feature unique Nine Game Pennant campaigns and additional features that deepen and enhance the core game. They are:
  • Deadball: Year II, which features a franchise generator that allows you to create the ballclub of your dreams from scratch.
  • Deadball: Year III, which includes rules for throwing the World Series, the Steroid Era, and all sorts of dirty play.
  • Deadball: Year IV, which includes three pieces of ballpark fiction written by W.M. Akers, including one starring his acclaimed private investigator, Gilda Carr.
  • Deadball: Masters of the Game, which makes the financial and historical sides of the game richer than ever before.

A NOTE ABOUT DICE: This book does not come with dice. You can play Deadball with any standard set of RPG dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d00, d12, d20), or a dice-rolling app.

Hey W.M. Akers - Love the game and have been playing a ton of it.
I have a rules question. Under Pitching on the bottom of page 35 it states "If a starting pitcher allows a run in the 7th inning or later, their pitch die is automatically reduced to d4."
But, on the the Quick Reference pages that came with the game, under Pitcher Fatigue it says (for modern) AFTER 7 innings, if the pitcher allows a run, reduce the XXX to d4. And, the Ancient page says AFTER 8 innings, if the pitcher allows a run, reduce the XXX to a d4. Which version was intended for that rule?

Thank you for the question and I'm sorry for not getting to it sooner! I follow the rule as written on the Quick Reference—this rule comes into effect AFTER the 7th (for Modern) or 8th (for Ancient).

I'm interested and have the first edition. What are the changes? Would getting the second edition be recommended?

This is in my top 3 of the best tabletop baseball games ever made. It's so easy and enjoyable. It also has a lot of depth to it. Thank you so much. And the maker is the sweetest person ever.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
