The Old World is a dangerous place. With the Empire fractured within and threatened by enemies without, it is only wise to learn the skills of a soldier, or to employ those who already have. Some may say that to live by the sword is to die by the sword, and there is truth to this. But in the wilds of the Empire, to refuse to live by the sword is to die by the sword even sooner.

Up in Arms provides options and guidance for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Characters who follow warrior careers. It focuses on abilities that players and GMs can make use of to add variety and expertise to the fighting folk of the Old World.

This 144 page book contains:

  • A discussion of the Cult of Myrmidia, giving the most comprehensive guide yet published to the beliefs and practices of those who worship the Goddess of Strategy.

  • Soldiers of all Stripes, detailing the experience of the rank-and-file members of the Empire’s glorious state troops, and providing new careers such as the handgunner, halberdier, and greatsword.

  • A history of the role of mercenaries in the wars of the Old World, including background and rules to support playing Tilean Characters and other dogs of war.

  • A guide to the renowned knightly orders of the Empire, with options for joining secular orders, templar chapters, or going it alone as a freelance knight.

  • An expanded list of weapons and armour, from basic arms such as swords and axes, to exotic specialised equipment such as weighted nets and pavises.

  • Rules for taking cover within vehicles and buildings — and counterpart rules for blowing vehicles and buildings up with devastating artillery.

  • Detail on the employment of hireling NPCs, including a system for generating individual quirks and work ethics.

  • Optional and additional rules covering new Endeavours, alternative approaches to Critical Injury, mounted combat, uses of Advantage, Pursuits, and Talents.

For those of you concerned about the reprinting of the critical tables, take a look at them. They are not the same tables as the core book. These are new tables for use with the new critical rules presented in the book.

For those raising issues with this (and there are a lot with this supplement), I suggest using the errata, here: https://cubicle7games.com/our-games/errata-submission/

I don't know why they don't publicise this more.

The section on Tilea and Mymdyia are good (although I suspect we may see this information again in the religion book when it arrives), as are the changes for combat, althouh the critical tables inclusion seems superflous.

There's quite a few new careers, but they are flavours (four types of soldier, four types of knight, warrior priest from tilea) rather then new ones. Elite greatswords have the same status as rank and file halbediers or archers. Siege weapons are also in the archives of the empire vol 2 book.

A few new weapons, but the best ones are gunpowder, by a long way. The others are quite niche. More information about running a mercenary game would have been good. Overall a nice to have book, but probably worth picking up for £10 or so as a pdf.

Hey all, Up in Arms has been updated with an errata version, fixing various issues throughout the book. The copy/paste error was introduced during a late change to layout order after the proof reader had already been through this one, apologies for that! We hope that the Knights Panther can forgive our error on the page describing the members of their fine and storied order!

The formatting of the book is done in a way that fills pages rather than squeezes in content. Paragraphs have what looks to be a 1.5 spacing after every line, in contrast to the tight spacing of something like the core rulebook. There are relatively medium-sized negative space holes throughout the book.

Weapon and critical injury tables are literally copy and pasted from the core rulebook. I assume to fill up space.

There's some really good, but also some really terrible art. A lot of the added rules feel complicated for their own sake and are kind of nauseating.

The Myrmedia section is well done, but it's yet another missed opportunity to have a book dedicated to religion and the gods rather than have the content flung about the entire system in random books. A curious design choice for a system when part of the objective of these books should be to categorize content generally and then specifically in a way that makes the content of the whole system easy to access. Would just like to add that the margins are also larger than in other supplements and the font itself is larger as well. This, along with other things I list above, turns a 146 page book into much less in terms of content. I add this particularly because there is no preview available.

Page 94 - Table is titled "Cavalry Weapons Table" should be "Brawling Weapons Table"

The Knights Panther section is missing it's background text and instead has the Knights of the White Wolf background repeated in its place.

I mentioned that copy/paste error, but I've since found a few more just with a quick skim. I really hope this thing gets some quality proofing before the print copy is made.

Page 36 has some copy/paste errors. It repeats much of the flavor text from the Knights of the White Wolf, but the mechanics seem to be appropriate for the Knights Panther.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
