Love the Eldritch Hack and it's a wonderful PDF to view on a PC but woeful to print. The good professor does a great job of simplifying game mechanics and now just needs to do the same for this PDF.

Cloque House might be good to run in the Stormcrow Mansion I'm printing off...

Thank you Professor Dungeon Master. I have thought about getting the CoC RPG but did not want to dive into a new system that would not get played much by my current group (they are heavy into 5e and I only recently introduced them to OSE).

These rules will hit the right spot with mechanics they are familiar with and also give me a chance to run some more Lovecraftian style games in a more modern setting. It's a win-win.

Only one request, is it possible to get a printer-friendly version of these rules?

Sire,

Page 19, Firearms table, first entry: Baretta.
Is it a typo or is there a weapon of such name?

Typo; he's referring to the pistol called a beretta. "Baretta" was an old tv series my father watched :P

Esteemed Professor DM,

This book of yours brings happiness and joy.
As a long time mythos acolyte and a hoarder of ephemera cthulhiana I would like to say thank you for the Eldritch Hack.

May I kindly point your attention to giving numbers to all lists in your future creations?
It makes choosing e.g. a name for a character much faster.

This way or another, congratulations on such (rolled 2 on page 14) amorphous creation.

With regards
Occult Wildlife Librarian

Chases are a big part of Call of Cthulhu. How do you guys handle this in Eldritch Hack?

Just a fellow purchaser of Eldritch Hack and a fan of the game...so not "official" word...but I'd simply have the parties in the chase either both try to meet a set difficulty number a few times, with first party to reach the number of "successes" winning the chase. Either that, or just have the parties or persons in the chase roll the d20 and add their Skill rating to the roll. Monsters in the chase can roll flat d20 or add a Skill bonus if they're fast, or flying, or skipping through dimensions, or whatever. Whoever rolls highest wins the chase. Or have them make a sequence of opposed rolls ("best three out of five" or whatever) and whoever comes out on top, wins the chase.

So in combat if you wish to hit a monster you have to beat its TN (basically a AC) however on your own character sheet you as the player don't have a TN. How do we determine if the monster hits the player?

From the GM's portion of the rules

HITTING TARGETS
The GM sets the Target Number (TN) and rolls for the monsters & NPC's. The player rolls for their characters.

The base TN needed to hit is 10

The GM may lower or raise the TN in particular circumstances such as:
- The target has cover
- It is a foggy night
- The lights are out
- The target is unusually quick
- The target is taken by suprise

So if I am reading this correctly, the NPC's have to hit TN10 unless there is something else making it harder for them to hit you.

That's how I understand the rules as well. If a player has written in the skill "Dodge" or "Boxing" or whatever, I might raise the TN by their Skill rating. So an NPC bad guy shooting at a PC with the Dodge skill (say, Skill rating of 5) would need to roll base 15 to hit that player-character. Similarly, trying to land a punch on a player-character with the Boxing skill would mean TN10 + their Skill rating in boxing.

I think some editing is in order: TN, DR, DC are all used to refer to the same thing, but only TN is defined in the rules. DC seems to be from DnD, but unless I knew that, I wouldn’t know what it means.

IMHO I find the wording for the rules on rolling abilities a bit convoluted. To determine Skill the rule is to roll 3d6 & use the highest, while for Sanity roll 2d6 and discard the lowest. I suggest to use the same wording for both, roll & use the highest. I'm also using 3d6 for both stats in my own game just to make them the same, but that's me.

As well I'm no mathematician but isn't rolling 6d6/2 for HP mathematically the same as just rolling 3d6, so why not just simply roll 3d6?

Thanks for the great game.

When rolling dice, the more you throw the closer to average you get. So while 6d6/2 and 3d6 should average around 10-11, with 6d6/2 it's just going to be more likely. Rolling 3d6 can be real swingy making it easier to have one character with only a few HP, while another has tons.

I hadn't considered that, good points. Although low HP might be fun too :). Thanks for the reply

It also makes the minimum an 8 instead of 3 with 3d6. Every dice added changes odds too. More chances for six’s and ones.

Whatever you did to reduce the file size I LOVE IT! My only other wish would be to please split the rules & the adventure into separate files, if it's not too much trouble.

Great work. Thanks!

Just looking for a clarification. Page 5, under skill, “To determine a character’s level of skill, roll 3d6 and assign the higher of the two numbers to the skill.”
Is this a misprint? Should that be 2D6? I would think so looking at the other abilities but don’t like to assume anything.
Thanks.

Yes this needs to be fixed. Roll '3d6 and pick the highest number of the two dice' makes no sense. It's either roll 3d6 and pick the highest of the three, or roll 2d6 and pick the highest of the two. Which is it?

In the monsters section, it says that Dr. Herbert West and Cellar Ghouls are fast, always attacking first and with Advantage. But Advantage is not defined in the rules. Is attacking with Advantage the standard roll of two d20s and pick the best result? Or is it something else in this game?

Based on viewing PDMs video channel for several years, he is a fan of the standard Advantage/Disadvantage system, I don't have this game but I would say it is most likely that.

The security settings on the Eldritch Hack pdf that I just purchased and downloaded won't enable printing. The printing option is grayed out. Can the creator of this game please modify the upload's security setting so that - as a purchaser - I can print out a copy of the PDF.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
