Warlock! Traitor's Edition

Same great game, awesome new look!

This is a new edition of the Warlock! core rules.

New fonts, new layout, new art.

If you have Warlock! already, you don't need this version (but you know you want it!).

Warlock is a rules-light roleplaying game that aims to emulate the feeling of old-school British tabletop games of wondrous and fantastical adventure. Warlock looks to reproduce the play style of its illustrious predecessors but in a light, quick and simple manner, with a consistent rules set that is easily hackable and adaptable as desired.

What is this game?

Warlock is a tabletop roleplaying game, played with pencils, paper and dice. The implied setting is a fantasy world in a vast Kingdom of man. Beset on all sides by enemies, both without and within, the players control characters struggling to survive in a fantastic world. So thematically, Warlock is a fantasy game of perilous adventure. However Warlock does not contain lots of explicit setting information, so you can use it with your favourite published or home-made settings. Instead Warlock aims to give you a simple and concise set of rules that you can shape as you need.

This is the same base text as the original Platinum selling edition, here:

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/312204/Warlock

There have been some minor changes listed below, but these have been updated to both versions of the game, so no matter if you have this one or the original edition, the rules are functionally the same:

1) Small changes to the wording in a couple of places for clarity.

2) Your career skill is now equal in value to the lowest skill that your career grants, rather than the average.

3) You roll 1d6 on the critical tables + negative stamina, not 2d6 (this is to make the probabilities work and the game slightly less dangerous).

4) Blast and Foulness spells have had their stamina cost reduced by one, and the Sleep spell has had its stamina cost reduced by two.

All content for the original Warlock! is 100% compatible with the Traitor's Edition!

Customer comments:

‘looks very cool. Reminds me of that other game – battle hammer....war mallet....whatever. Also the old "choose your path" adventure books.’

‘This is a fantastic hybrid of Fighting Fantasy and WFRP 1st ed., both extremely nostalgic for me. Cracking little game and easy to hack!’

‘I really like some of the design decisions you made. Every game should have your rule: “any situation not covered in the rules, roll a D6.” Career choices are great, every skill for everybody is fascinating, and going statless is bold. Everything is old school and dead simple. Can’t wait to run the game.’

Hello. I bought Warlock and started playing with it, but I can't find any rules for dealing with fire and the damage that characters take. Same thing for falling from high places. How is this handled in warlock? Is there a supplement that addresses this?

The good and the bad. First the good: it's fun. I love Warhammer but don't love the rules complexity, this has a similar flavor but is much simpler. The combat system is marvelous and simple. Now (sorry old chap) the critiques: So, having actually played it... some elements are a bit whack. It's actually easier to make an opposed skill test most of the time than a basic skill test. Basic skill test (includes casting a spell) you have to make 20+. Opposed skill test: low-level opposition has skill 5, so if they roll a 10 you only have to beat a 15. That's a bit off, that a basic skill test is harder when no one is opposing you. Next, spells are mostly weak, cost too much stamina and have too high a risk of failure. Only those on the Wizard/Initiate track will have enough skill to want to try a spell very often, since everyone else will have a 65-75% chance of failure, along with a substantial loss of Stamina for the attempt. Why would I pay 4 Stamina for an iffy chance to do 1d6+2 Lightning damage, when...See more

Great to hear a contrasting review, but just to add some counter to yours points for those reading it before purchase and perhaps being put off I'd add that:
- my groups have loved the Warhammer-y penalisation and danger of magic...it is a last resort reserved for particular situations
- the unopposed skill test challenge vs low-level opposition combat seems to work well in the thematic world of dank grimness and the unpredictability of a situation vs the more predictable and readable novice combat actions matches that well

We've loved it as an antithesis to other more D&D-ish systems and this thematic approaches seems to ring true as being way more in the style of the WFRP V1 brutality and pragmatism.

Hope that helps balance any worries peeps have about splashing out

My apologies for the tone that this probably comes across as having, but no matter how many times I try to rephrase this, I can't seem to find a way to make it sound less... disgruntled.

After purchasing the hardcover and PDF, and finally being able to sit down with the physical book when it arrived, I noticed that the PDF is more up to date(?) than the physical book. Even though they were purchased at the same time. Is there a reason that the revised PDF's are not sent to DriveThruRPG so that the books can be printed with the revised content? I mean, I get it that the file DriveThru has IS the file they have to print, but when it gets updated, why isn't it replaced so that when we pay for the physical book, we get the same content as the PDF?

Again, I don't know how to phrase this and not come across as a horse's rear. I tried... but I think I failed miserably.

Have I said something wrong? It would be nice if the author would take a moment to comment on the question I have asked... poorly worded as it may have been.

Hi there. There is one error in the print version, a hang over from the previous edition (as you have noted, one explanation of the way the career skill is obtained). Changing the PDF takes moments. Changing the print version can take several months. Essentially, it is very quick and simple to update the PDF, but making changes to print is much more difficult. The PDF will always be the most up to date version of the rules.

Wait...what? Isn't the PDf the same print ready PDF that becomes the POD physical book? I mean, when I create a book on Lulu, the PDF I upload to print the book is the same PDF you buy/download.

These books are not in a warehouse waiting to be sold so the next print run can use the "new" pdf. Your answer makes no sense unless DTRPG does some wonky shite with their POD process.

There are two versions of every product. A PDF designed for download (low res, small file size), and one for printing (high res, specific format). They are independent files dealt with independently on DTRPG. Otherwise you have a download PDF that is a few hundred MB in size, or a print version with low quality pixelated art designed for screen viewing rather than printing.

Have really enjoyed this product so far. I would like to pose an example to check my understanding of the rule on Gaining Stamina, p. 61. I make my initial skill assignments; determine my initial career; and suppose my initial career skills correlated thus: Skill A = 6; skill B = 5, skill C = 4, skill D = 5, skill E = 6. Next, I can now allocate the 10 advancements (p. 15). My pre-allocation Career Skill level is 4.

Case (I): Suppose my allocations: A to 8; B to 8; D to 8; E to 8 and C remains = 4. My post-allocation Career Skill level remains = 4.

Now to the question, if I spend 4 future advances bringing Skill C to 5 to 6 to 7 to 8, I would gain +4 to Stamina (c.f. p. 61)?

Case (II) Now compared to the (10 levels) allotment choice: A to 8; B to 7; C to 7; D to 7; E to 7. Here, my post allocation Career Skill level =7 and I would only gain a +1 to Stamina by bringing them all (at least) to level = 8?

It seems one trades more immediate access to a higher generic...See more

That's right. You could 'game' the system to give yourself a bigger stamina bump from the get go if you really wanted, but only until the lowest skill level is roughly the same as the other skills.

PS I think you meant 'provenance' not 'providence' in the Appraise Skill description! :-)

Two questions:
1. What skill do AXE weapons belong to? Polearms?
2. Is there a printer-friendly version of the new character sheet?
Thanks!

From the skills listed, "Large Blade" seems the most appropriate for axes (except for poleaxes, which would use "Pole Arm"). If you want, you could split "Large Blade" into two different skills: "Sword" and "Axe."

Excellent game! It channels the spirit of certain games I love--WFRP, WFRP 2nd, and Zweihander, but streamlines things for fast and easy play.

I’m in the process of getting the pdf printed (as matter of fact, it’s ready for pickup). I told my printer a new version with corrections had been released. She said that if the changes are minor, they’d be able to swap out pages no charge. That being said, is there somewhere I can find out what the changes were? Thanks - love the game BTW.

Really just eyeball it. Stat blocks in Warlock! are super simple - you just need a skill and stamina value. You can use the examples in the book as a guide.

I really like these -- just bought a bunch of the PDFs. I wanted to see what I thought before going in on a print edition. As a purchaser of the PDF, can I purchase a print version minus what I spent on the PDF? I am not sure how drivethrurpg works in that regard. Also I actually like the original layout more and will be buying that book over the newer version to make the other books I buy match as well (since the other books have that font too). Not sure why people disliked it...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
