HYPERBOREA is a role-playing game of swords, sorcery, and weird science-fantasy. It is played with paper, pencil, dice, and imagination. Participants include a referee and one or more players. The referee prepares and presents the adventure material (circumstances, challenges, quests, mysteries, etc.), and the players create player characters (PCs), including fighters, magicians, clerics, thieves, and 22 possible subclasses, including barbarian, berserker, cataphract, huntsman, paladin, ranger, warlock, cryomancer, illusionist, necromancer, pyromancer, witch, druid, monk, priest, runegraver, shaman, assassin, bard, legerdemainist, purloiner, and scout..

The heroes of a HYPERBOREA game delve dungeons filled with horrifying monsters, lethal traps, and bewildering puzzles; they explore savage wilderness frontiers and dangerous borderlands; they probe ancient ruins and investigate cursed tombs; they match steel against sorcery and sorcery against steel; and they plunder for gold, gems, and magical treasure.

HYPERBOREA is a “flat earth” realm hemmed in by the mystical boreas (“North Wind”), and under the scarlet light of a bloated, dying sun, its roiling seas spill eternal over the world’s rim. This world is in a perpetual state of decay and is populated by disharmonious men and women, hostile monsters, and weird, alien beings. The setting is adaptable and can be used independently or in conjunction with other milieux, published or home-brewed; indeed, HYPERBOREA might be just beyond the North Wind of any campaign setting.

The author sells hardcopies infinitely superior to any POD, so buy one of those. Smyth sewn binding, thick pages, great print quality. Can't go wrong.

Just for your information in a next version : " Some people consider Eskimo offensive, because it is popularly perceived to mean "eaters of raw meat" in Algonquian languages common to people along the Atlantic coast. The Inuit are referred to in some Cree texts as askipiw (meaning "eats something raw"). Regardless, the term still carries a derogatory connotation for many Inuit and Yupik. "

I've known a lot of Yupiq and Inupiaq - and they prefer Eskimo to Inuit - as Inuit refers to east coast distant relatives.

Eskimo is considered quite derogatory here in eastern Canada. Everybody says Inuit.

Very excited to play this. I love the 'science fantasy' approach. I wonder if there is a way of getting the larger PDFs down to under 100MB? It is a shortcoming of my e reader but a monochrome version might be handy.

For what amounts to almost duplication of the older "Sword and Sandals" genre, I don't think there's very much out there that can say they compete with this.

For fans of Robert E. Howard, and those that like his books, this newer edition of what once was called"Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers", the new edition breaks things down into a Player's Guide and a GM's Guide that can't be beaten!

Main difference is combat is no longer 2 phases. More explicit action type order in round of combat. Initiative is side vs side, unless there's a tie in which case it's everyone in Dex order (love this rule).
Minor differences are:
Removed level draining monsters.
Removed rules for asphyxia.
Removed rules for aerial combat.
Deadly poisons no longer immediate death sentence if there's someone in the group who can draw poison.
Monk is a little more powerful.
Fell paladins (LE) as class.
New historical ethnic groups as races.
Simpler 2-weapon fighting.
Sorcery Resistance now a flat number rather than diminished by attacker's caster level (least favorite change).
Removed spell failure %, now we assume casters just can't cast in armors they're prohibited. Which is a guess, the rules don't say.
More plainly shows how/when classes can learn new weapon skills.
Critical Failures (optional) in the book.

Clarification. The monsters are still there, but they don't drain levels. Just Con, a point of which is permanent (until restored by restoration)

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
