What does it mean to be “sapient”?

In a far off star system, the descendants of two starship crews scheme and fight a shadow war to determine if there’s hope for peaceful co-existence, or if the future will be one of violent human supremacy.

Embroiled in this war are the sapient Apes, Octopuses, and Androids uplifted by humanity but kept in servitude and slavery. Should intelligence grant autonomy? Is freedom a basic right, or is it a privilege? Do you owe anything to those who made you intelligent?

Sapience is a Scifi Tabletop RPG set in a far off cluster of space. Players can play as Humans, Androids, a mysterious goblin-like alien, or an uplifted intelligent Orangutan, Gorilla, or Octopus. The base theme of the game is exploration of privilege and discrimination, as humans do not treat the animals they have uplifted very well, and the setting features a cold war (essentially mirroring the US civil war) between the factions who treat the uplifts as animals and those who treat them as people. Or if these themes are too dark, then they can simply be ignored and the game can be enjoyed as a space opera with uplifted animals and androids!

Sapience is an exciting new Space Opera that asks these questions. Within, you will find:

  • A revolutionary new die system where a single die roll determines two entirely different metrics at the same time, aiding collaborative and nuanced gameplay, and allowing on-the-fly modification of how you perform the action you’re using.
  • Rules for creating and advancing characters, with 6 playable species' and a guided freeform method of skill and trait selection and development.
  • A detailed timeline of the history of the colonization of “The Hope Cluster” and all you need to know about the current state of the Cluster, its politics, its various colony worlds and asteroid settlements, the factions and guilds involved in the cold war, and much much more.
  • Rules for creating and crewing your own spaceship, as well as access to a large number of starship deckplan battlemaps, docks, and space stations.
  • Melee and starship combat, trading, adventure, and exploration of ancient ruins.
  • A discussion on the darker themes of the game, and how to incorporate them into your own stories and campaigns

There's heaps more information to be found on the Sapience webpage, at http://www.sapiencerpg.com.

"Should intelligence grant autonony?" I assume you mean 'autonomy'.
This looks very interesting ... as does the companion site.

This looks really interesting, but is there some way I can get a good look at the dice mechanic? And maybe a little more detail on the setting?
Also, no Corvids? Psittacidae? Procyonidae? Wah! ;-)

It is really cool, tbh. I would suggest checking out the website, the about page has a diagram showing the basics of the dice mechanic: https://www.sapiencerpg.com/about

You can find out pretty much everything about the dice mechanics on the website sapiencerpg.org. I really like it (from what I've seen), it is a pretty simple system with a pool of d6 where you count successes, but has an extra axis that is coded by dice color and separate from this. And it includes wounds and exhaustion extremely elegant into the roll. You can get a LOT of information out of one roll without being the least bit fiddly (at least that's how it looks from reading, I haven't played Sapience yet - but I certainly will as soon as I get an opportunity!)

Hi there. A couple of others have already answered your question pretty well, so I wont repeat what they said too much. As they said, on www.sapiencerpg.com there's a dice infographic, and also an online dice roller, so you can see it in action or even use it while you play (there's a downloadable Windows version on the resources page as well, but I just have the web version open on my phone if I don't have my dice handy).

I have also created a discord (https://discord.gg/b8nDy7Cg) so if you like I am happy to chat and answer any questions there.

Thanks, Brian.

Thank you Brian. I joined the discord and looked at the website (btw, I'd suggest putting that in the product description if you could - too much useful information there for potential customers) and I _think_ I understand the dice mechanic (random draw of the dice colors is interesting) so color me curious. I'll pick up a pdf soon.

That's a great idea, which I have just done, thanks. Happy to discuss the dice system at the discord if you like.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
