Dissonance - A 2-Page 1920s Adventure for Call of Cthulhu - Miskatonic Repository

Players! Read no farther! Keepers, forge ahead!

The new national radio service is in its first week of broadcast from London, but last night, the regularly scheduled programming was briefly interrupted by unintelligible raving. Most think nothing of it. The station manager can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to this than meets the ear. But he has his eye on a few new friends he’s made at his favorite club who might be able to help him. Will the investigators take him up on his offer for a backstage tour to find out what makes a radio station tick?

In this two-page one-shot adventure in easy-to-absorb pamphlet format, playable in a single session by two or more players, investigators must discover the cause behind the descent into madness for the radio stations control man and confront a newly unleashed and ancient horror.

This adventure includes 2 pages of scenario information with locations, scenes, NPCs, and clues to use at the Keeper's discretion. This condensed format is best used by Keepers who have run Call of Cthulhu scenarios before and who need a foundation for their own embellishments.

Trigger warnings: Horror, Insanity, Violence

The adventure begins on a rainy evening in London in 1923 when the investigators meet the manager of the radio station at a posh club. A polite and friendly conversation reveals strange and sinister happenings.

The scenario encompasses four scenes:

  • Chapter 1: Meet the Baron Broadcaster at the Kit-Kat Club
  • Chapter 2: Secrets of the Studio at Savoy Hill
  • Chapter 3: Riot on the Roof on the roof of the Savoy Hill Studio
  • Chapter 4: Chapel Chase at Savoy Hill Chapel

The download for this adventure consist of a single two-page printable pamphlet in PDF format. It is 8 1/2" x 11" and is layed out to be folded in thirds.

It is playable via theater of the mind. However, an optional supplement with maps and a handout is available under a separate title Maps for Dissonance: A 2-Page 1920s Adventure for Call of Cthulhu.

This is a SanityFree Adventure.

The setting and non-player characters are inspired by the founding of the British Broadcasting Company in 1923.

Some players were harmed in the making of this adventure, or so they tell me. They got better. As always, thanks to them.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
