Super Action Role-Play

Selected Option:
Hardcover, Standard Color Book
PDF + Hardcover, Standard Color Book

Super Action Role-Play (SAR) features comic book action with Bronze Age stylings! Make heroes or villains using a points-free system that minimizes number-crunching. The game’s versatile mechanics use a rugged 3D6-based action system that gives the gamemaster and players more control when the moment is at its most dramatic. Born from two previous editions of the 3D6 Supers RPG rules, SAR features area-based movement and easy “mook” mechanics that will have your characters mowing through nameless hordes and looking super-cool while doing it! Play using maps and miniatures, or employ theater of the mind, narrative style storytelling.

SAR also features a thematic caper generator for villain-based games, secret base design rules, a complete sample adventure, a skirmish plugin for player vs. player action, and solo rules to run exciting battles all on your own! All you need to play are four six-sided dice and a handful of tokens or counters. Start your super adventures today with SAR!

Bonus! SAR also includes two sheets of paper miniatures!

Loving this game! Just had a few quick questions...

1. I don't think this is spelled out, but can a PC call out an NPC's Negative Thing for a bonus in combat? Or are negative things exclusively used by the GM? And can Origin's be used for both positive and negative results?

2. When using the "Trade in Rules" (ie: Trade two boosts to get a minor power), if that Minor Power is a device, you add a boost, so essentially the trade only costs 1 boost, correct?

3. In combat, it says a character can move and attack... does it matter what order this is done in? I'm assuming you can attack, then move if you wish, unless you are 'Locked Down" by a failed attack?

Hey, Andrew! I answered these on theFB Group, but I will answer them here too for anyone else who is curious.

1. Yes, a PC can do this.

2. Yes. Correct. Just remember a power has to cost at least one Boost.

3. Yes, they can do this in whatever order they wish.

Beware! Long question, but I feel I'm not alone that could benefit from it so here it comes.

I'm on the market to find a good solo/coop super-heroes game but I'm really struggling to differenciate between all of Four-color's offerings (aside from the dice system and the character creation process). So say I'm looking for:

- A game where solo/coop doesn't feel tacked on or an afterthought
- Where scenarios and campaigns are proceduraly generated from different variables more than fixed (think Five Parsecs from home more than Rangers of Shadowdeep, if it helps)
- Encounters can be linked together to form a campaign and give an overarching story kinda feel
- Scenarios are more diverse than just "beat every opponent". Maybe deal with catastrophes, rescue or stealth missions. Investigate a crime. Chase villains across rooftops, this kinda stuff.
- Where playing either one hero or a team is doable, and playing an entire team is not a bookeeping chore.
-That...See more

These are really great questions! Let me try to address what I can.

"- A game where solo/coop doesn't feel tacked on or an afterthought"

That game is Slugfest for sure, but read on.

"- Where scenarios and campaigns are proceduraly generated from different variables more than fixed (think Five Parsecs from home more than Rangers of Shadowdeep, if it helps)"

This is not really how Slugfest works in terms of the campaign. There is not a random element. You pick your adventure and run through it to conclusion. Then pick another, and so on.

"- Scenarios are more diverse than just "beat every opponent". Maybe deal with catastrophes, rescue or stealth missions. Investigate a crime. Chase villains across rooftops, this kinda stuff."

Again, Slugfest is more about fights, and befitting a true miniature skirmish game.

I think SAR will be your best option for this. I am really excited about...See more

Hey thanks a lot for the quick response. So I have pretty much rules out Slugfest and leaning on SAR thanks to you. Based on my overall criterias would you say SAR or Supersystem 4th fits the bill more?

SAR but you will need the campaign supplement I gave you the link for. When we get the laid out version done, my plan is to offer a coupon to folks who already bought SAR.

Of course, the current free play test version works just fine too!

To Scott P: could you explain the differences between SAR and 3d6-2E? Thanks.

They share some of the same text, but there are significant differences.

* SAR uses points free, archetype and menu based character generation.

* SAR uses zone-based movement.

* SAR's primary initiative mechanic is a dice off, then alternating activation. Card-based initiative remains an option in the appendix.

* SAR features some new dice mechanics like Dice Shifts and the Double Bonus (for generating karma).

* SAR features a number of new and revised powers.

* SAR features a more complete Caper generator and the Villain Mission Force adventure framework.

I think those are the main points.

Sorry I did not see this sooner, but let me know if you have any follow up questions.

Thank you! I am also working on more robust Solo RPG rules as a free plug-in. The Solo rules in the rule book focus on running skirmishes and battles. This plug-in will provide a more robust solo RPG experience.

They posted a link to a Rules Primer in the description above. Don't know if that is what you are looking for.

Character generation is done through archetypes and menu options. No point buy or points costs. You select an archetype from a list and it provides you power options to select. You can also choose the Wildcard, which allows you to select from every power available in the game. That's for folks who want to really dig into the character generation. Hope this helps--if you have more questions, please let me know. Thank you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
