Cowpunchers is a crunch light cowboy western rpg that takes place in the 1870s Southwestern United States. The game is a simple mixture of level and skill based progression that uses d6s only. The "Wild West" was deadly and so is Cowpunchers. Thankfully, character creation is easy.

It's a cowboy game with simple rules that is easy to learn so that you can get right to forming a posse.

Included with the rules is a simple scenario and a fillable character sheet, a hex map for the scenario and any future ones, and a battlemap that is roll20 compatible.

Physical copies can be had at Lulu.

I like awarding experience for succeeding an untrained skill check. It gives incentive to try things you might not be good at and perhaps influence the next expenditure of skill points.

Thank you. Yeah that was my idea with that. I want players to take risks and therefore reward them for it.

Once you’ve determined your bonus dice & modifier (if any) and calculated your movement does your 3-18 attribute score ever again have an impact on play? And page 6 - Rolling Attribute & Skill Checks - spells out Skill checks well enough but not so much on Attribute checks. Ex. does one have to roll a 6 to succeed, like an untrained skill? Thx -

I have optional rules that allow for less squishy games that have damage go to hit points first, then the physical attributes as well. Or allow for no hit points and damage to always be dealt to physical attributes only.

I still view this as a work in progress and plan on updating this based on feedback I receive as well. I had a lot of play testers. But you know stuff still gets to be an issue.

Considering that it is rules light too, I didn't fill in certain gaps. If a Range Boss (Game master) wishes to have core attributes decrease and thus affecting bonus dice for that attribute due to injury, that is also possible. Thanks for the comment!

Oh and as for rolling a six to succeed on an attribute, I ran my game as a 5 or 6 and not like skills.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
