Does this have the b/w ship plans pdf from the "old" one?
Customer avatar
Rory H January 11, 2022 7:54 pm UTC
It has 2D ship plans now, I think as part of the general review. While 3D decks are good to look at, the 2D decks are more useful in play

There are some simpler B&W printable copies on the Mongoose website if needed, but the 2D plans in the book are printable as is.

Will this new revision trigger an update of the Referee's Screen? I have never seen the back of the screen but I was wondering if there were tables or page references to update.
Customer avatar
Rory H January 01, 2022 4:53 am UTC
I think that pretty much all the charts in the Referee’s screen remain relevant and usable with the Update, although I’d have to carefully check for any minor changes to weapon stats, etc perhaps.

There isn’t a new screen on the current Mongoose release schedule, which is not to say they won’t have one in the future but it doesn’t look like a priority.

This is my first Traveller book and i'm really happy with it ! I have just one problem, where is the character sheet ? I mean the one shown in the book; when I go to the Mongoose website, I get a different one. That's not a major problem but I prefer the sheet in the book.

Nevertheless this version of Traveller is gorgeous and really simple to use, I recommend it !

I asked about it on the Mongoose site. New character sheet will be up soon, apparently.

As someone who's considering getting into Traveller and running it, is it better to get this or the other core rulebook? Does this add anything that isn't in any of the other books? Do I still need the other books that they added stuff from like High Guard if decide to run something that requires it?
Customer avatar
Rory H December 19, 2021 7:48 am UTC
This new version is more complete than the old version for two reasons: Firstly, it includes basic ship building rules which the previous printing didn’t (which means you don’t have to get High Guard to build ships unless you want expanded rules). Secondly, it includes an index. It also has an improved layout and so on as part of the update.

What it takes out to make room for these things is an example sector, although I could point you in the direction of the and you can have the entire Charted Space for free instead...

For a first time Traveller buyer, this core book is complete and all you will ever need to run and play it.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if this added all the stuff from high guard or just some of it. I'll get this and probably companion to start then maybe high guard, supply, and vehicle later. I already knew this is all I need but I like players having access to more toys.
Customer avatar
Rory H December 28, 2021 7:13 pm UTC
Take note that both High Guard and Vehicles are due to have updates themselves in the coming year or so, before you purchase.

I bought this through the mongoose site, but figured I'd leave a comment. They did a great job fixing this up from the original. The art is top notch. My favorite change is the way they handle vehicle damage. They added in the optional rules for limiting damage light weapons can inflict on vehicles from the traveller companion, but they also reworked how the severity of critical hits is determined. Vehicle damage was my biggest problem with 2E, but now I like how they fixed it.

Fully agree that if you’re new this is where to start. This is the proper core rule set for Traveller with the starship rules as part of the package. If you already own MT2 and High Guard you don’t need this. It drops the subsector, making it more like the original black box, and that’s how far back I go.

The great thing about that black box was the lack of a pre-established background. Much as I love the depth of detail built up with the Imperium background, the thing about those books was they gave permission to my young brain to imagine and create my own worlds.

Another reason to get this particular core set is as part of the package if you’re just getting into 2300. These core rules are required for that game and given that direction of a shared set of core rules, dropping the subsector makes even more sense. If you’re already playing MT2 and want to get into 2300, and would not have purchased the 2022 update by itself, the bundle is tempting.

So much discussion...See more

If your just getting into Traveller, This is a good buy. Plus it adds the errata, and other rules from other books since MGT 2 came out a few years ago. I'll add the book has not only character generation, but world generation, and all the other essentials to play Traveller. They added basic ship design in this edition which arguably they should have done the last core rulebook. Yes this book is compatible with the current Source books, and adventures currently published, to include the 2300AD setting. This Book however dose not invalidate the more recent printings of the pervious core book.

Being fully honest: I'm a huge traveller fan. have been since the GURPS Traveller days. I already bought it.

Isn't there supposed to be a description of the Sindal subsector? And according to Behind the Claw, "The most common bases in the Imperium are detailed on page 227 of the Traveller Core Rulebook" I don't see this either.
Customer avatar
Rory H December 05, 2021 8:38 am UTC
That was in the previous iteration of the core rules.

In this update, the introductory sector was removed and effectively replaced with basic ship building rules. Some fans had requested that they wanted basic ship building rules in the core as a priority.

The common bases, in this update, can now be found on p259 due to the rearranged interior.
Customer avatar
Craig C December 06, 2021 2:53 am UTC
Page 259 really only defines bases.
Customer avatar
Rory H December 06, 2021 8:04 am UTC
They explain what the bases are. That is all that that happened in the old version, although they have added some additional types so it is expanded on what it was.
Customer avatar
Craig C December 06, 2021 1:32 pm UTC
OK, so I guess the quote from Behind the Claw should really be "The most common _types_of_ bases"?
Customer avatar
Benjamin F December 01, 2021 4:27 pm UTC
I see why this was called an update now and not a new edition, upon cursory review looks like not much has been changed aside from adding an index and putting ship creation back in the core book. Wish I didn't waste my money, feels like a cash grab.

Where is the character sheet?
Customer avatar
Rory H November 30, 2021 2:32 am UTC
There are downloadable character sheets on the Mongoose site, although they have yet to update them to the new style.
Customer avatar
Jay W November 30, 2021 4:01 am UTC
Very odd to me to have a core rulebook that doesn't include a character sheet, especially after it takes a few pages to describe how to fill out the character sheet in some detail.
Customer avatar
Rory H November 30, 2021 5:16 am UTC
Yep, that has been commented about although I think they generally use separate downloadable character sheet files for a lot of games. No doubt, the updated ones will be available soon - and the old ones that are available still function the same in the interim.

As a complete Traveller noob who wanted to get into the game now, i'm really baffled by how expensive the Mongoose PDFs are. In general i think Mongoose has the most expensive PDFs i have ever seen. They seem to be completely tone-deaf regarding comments talking about that.
I guess they have a solid buyer base and are not interested in new potential customers?! Well maybe i have to take a look at Cepheus Deluxe instead.
Customer avatar
Rory H November 18, 2021 1:31 am UTC
$30 for a core rulebook: the only book you’ll ever need to run science fiction stories in literally thousands of worlds, and all the support you could ever wish for with one of the most celebrated and seminal RPGs of all time.

Yep, count me in as a solid buyer.
Customer avatar
True B November 26, 2021 5:42 pm UTC
Check out Cepheus, it is a much better system.
Customer avatar
Rory H November 26, 2021 5:43 pm UTC
It's not. It’s just a retroclone based on an old OGL.
Customer avatar
Gus B November 28, 2021 8:52 pm UTC
Agreed. Cepheus is decent. Not a better system, imo.

I have bought two editions of MGT. The second is markedly worse than the first, save for glossy pages and mediocre art. Why should I buy this when I could buy Stars Without Number?
Customer avatar
Rory H November 14, 2021 6:23 am UTC
It is a 50/50 call as to whether anybody should respond to this and people will, no doubt accuse me of responding to everything on this subforum (whenever it pops up on my email account).

However, honestly, as a passionate Traveller fan - I find Stars Without Numbers to be an inelegant mash-up of ‘Old School’ D&D ideas (eg D20 based combat and Saving throws) latched on to a Traveller-esque skill system (2D6 based) and other Traveller-esque concepts (eg randomized tables for world design, etc) that were only original and innovative, decades ago.

I cannot account for taste about art or whatever criteria you have for saying that one edition is markedly worse than another, but this isn’t a new edition in any case. It is an update - layout, art, rules clarifications, editing choices - but the game itself is the same.

Traveller has a lot of support, both in terms of its playing fanbase and also a prolific range of published supplements. It has a proven legacy and iconic...See more

This version is presumably intended to be distributed alongside 2300AD which requires and does not include the core rulebook. I suspect there is no need to get this version unless you just want it. SWN has a free version, just use that. The paid version adds a couple chapters, but they aren't essential.
Customer avatar
True B November 26, 2021 5:43 pm UTC
I came here looking to see what's new in the product. You seem to be projecting bad intent on me when there is none.
Customer avatar
Gus B November 28, 2021 9:04 pm UTC
I'm assuming he's perceiving your (bad) intent on trashing MgT2 when you can and you continual recommendations of other systems (Cepheus, SWN) in a review area of the Traveller Core Rulebook 2022 Update. He (and others, perhaps) might perceive that in poor taste and antagonistic in approach. If you don't like this product, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with pointing out what you like and what you don't like about this product. "Why get X when I can get Y" or "Y is a better system than X" is not helpful. At. All.

As to your comment, the systems are different. That's why one would purchase this over SWN. If one wants D&D in space, with some OT bits slapped on, then one might be interested in SWN. If one wants Traveller, and wants the newest version of it, then one might be inclined to pick this up.

If I walk into a car dealer and ask why I should buy their car when it looks like all they did was add plastic chrome trim to the previous year model, that isn't bad intent. You do not know my intent. It is a genuine question.
Customer avatar
Rory H December 06, 2021 11:39 pm UTC
Not really a good analogy though, is it? It is more like you’ve set up a stand outside a dealership to shout disparaging things and give out leaflets to by-passers suggesting other dealerships.

Your intent is anybody’s guess, but the way you have framed your comments are not. Anyway, you’ve had two people directly answer your question already.
Customer avatar
True B December 14, 2021 6:34 pm UTC
I hope Mongoose is paying you well. Otherwise the degree to which you're shilling for them is pathetic. I asked a genuine question about getting a third version of a game I own twice. That's the chrome analogy.
Customer avatar
Rory H December 14, 2021 6:44 pm UTC
Are the other companies whose games you have been promoting on this thread paid you well? You’ve had direct answers to you question by two different people and still you are persisting in acrimonious commentary. Pathetic, indeed.
Customer avatar
Christopher G December 29, 2021 7:44 pm UTC
Wait, I thought True B liked Cepheus (see above). Now it's Stars Without Number? Seems petty to repeatedly suggest alternative games rather than express your gripes in more detailed fashion. Public forum, so you can say whatever you like, but it seems more like you're here to hate on Mongoose than add anything constructive. Can you elaborate on your feelings about Mongoose products? Also, you do realize Cepheus is basically MgT1 with a few different bells and whistles, right?

So why don't they just sell a new book with a new cover & all, I would prefer a hardcopy.
Customer avatar
Rory H November 11, 2021 4:10 am UTC
That is what this is.

You can buy/preorder the hardcopy at the Mongoose site (with the PDF included). It gets released in January. For me, I am looking forward to the limited edition Collectors’ Edition:

I picked up the update because I wanted to get into Traveller but did not have 2E. I did not know that if I had gone to the Mongoose website (and not Drivethrurpg) I could have gotten the print/pdf bundle :-(

Will there be a discounted print-on-demand version for people who bought the PDF version early?
Customer avatar
Rory H November 13, 2021 8:43 am UTC
The person you need to contact for those type of requests is Matt Sprange of Mongoose Publishing, at that website. Generally, it isn’t a usual case to get a POD option when the book is currently being sold in a traditional print run.

I emailed them @ asking this very question

>>>Hi I purchased Traveller 2020 a while back and I see there is an updated version now available but I was wondering if there was an "upgrade" option to get the new version. The pricepoint I can understand for someone buying new but for those of us that own 2020 the full price for an "updated version" isn't kind to us supporters.

This is their response...

It is an entirely new book, re-edited and re-laid out from start to finish, with new art, hence the price.

However, the book you have is still perfectly compatible with all future Traveller books of this edition – we made sure your current book has not been made obsolete.

Hope that makes sense!

November 04, 2021 3:39 am UTC
I think it is pretty crappy (sh****) that you would have to repurchase the Core Rulebook if you want the errata and cleaned up editing! This is not a new version so support what you already have out there! Any other company would at least offer an upgrade path or a discount! Mongoose, you make it really hard to support you when you pull stuff like this!
Customer avatar
Rory H November 04, 2021 3:50 am UTC
It isn’t a release just to clean up errata. It is essentially an alternative core rule book. They have made adjustments based on customer feedback over the last five years. The previous book had already had several printings just to clean up errata - and the purchasers of that PDF would have had that for free as updates.

You can still use the old core book without being ‘out of date’, but this allows fans who want to see something a bit new in appearance (or those who want to buy a limited edition like myself) an opportunity to do so.

I can site games like Pendragon, Doctor Who or Call of Cthulhu as games that have all done similar things with alternative rulebooks in recent times. All those involved making new purchases of updated rulebooks which were purely for cosmetic reasons.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
