It depends on which errata you are referring to, I guess? Mongoose do update their files with this sort of thing - the last update listed in the product information as March 29, 2022.

I'm hoping for some insight. I'm looking to mix up my D&D gaming group with some sci-fi adventure. After much research, I've settled on Traveller; and I clearly want the latest edition, so the 2022 rulebook is the place to start. But considering it's longevity and many renditions over the years, there is a confusing array of products...it seems too many. It seems that the Central Supply Catalogue and the Field Catalogue should be one product...the same with the Vehicle book and the High Guard book.

Regardless, it seems that aside from the Core rules, I should also purchase the Companion as, correct me if I'm wrong, this is essentially the DMG of Traveller. Is that correct?

Is 2300AD just a campaign setting? What other books are must-haves?

The only book you *need* is the core rules, and these are enough for years of play because of the various generation tables provided which allows you to randomly design sectors, planets and encounters. The 2022 Updated core rules also includes basic ship and vehicle design along with an abbreviated equipment catalogue. It is complete, in and of itself.

The next 'core rule books’ are the Central Supply Catalogue (general equipment), High Guard (for spacecraft) and Vehicles (for non-spacecraft) which all expand on those various areas with more options and examples. The Traveller Companion also includes more rules options, like a variety of character generation alternatives, for example. It is more topically eclectic than the DMG, to be sure, but does include some useful ideas. If you like PC Robots, then there is another new rulebook for that. These are all the ‘core rules’ expansions that exist. The rest is setting stuff.

The Field Catalogue is a sourcebook designed for Mercenaries...See more

Thank you so much, Rory. You've gone above and beyond, good sir. I'll start out with the core book and probably the Pirates setting book; that sounds very interesting. I'll see if there's enough meat there to satisfy what I feel I should know. If I find a lack of variety, then I'll branch out to High Guard and the Supply Catalogue, then continue from there.

Thanks again, you've been most helpful.

I was a completeist from 1977 to the end of TNE. I really disliked T4. I've enjoyed Mongoose 1e, but haven't looked much at 2e/update stuff.

In the Mongoose version of the game, at what point did they do the most complete re-envisioning of the characters' roles in space encounters/combat? I hear they've finally focused on the players and tried to give everyone a role (versus prior versions where the RPG on the ground was player centric, but in space, it was almost a space combat wargame and the only people that mattered were your gunner and your pilot sometimes). If there's one fairly complete treatment of a player-centric space combat system that tries to engage all the player characters, where does it live?

Mongoose 1e?
Mongoose 2e?
Mongoose 2022 update?

and if it is the update, does that mean I need anyother book to go along with it as the update might not be full rules?

Thanks - I know I want (have wanted since day 1 in Traveller) a player-centric...See more

The 2022 update is the latest version of the Mongoose Traveller 2e rules. It is a complete game, with a few adjustments mainly in layout and presentation. You do not need to buy another book to play it.

The 2e altered some of the rules so that combat is more seamless between space combat and ground combat. These rules are unaltered in the update.

I heard there was not starship rules in the previous edition, has that changed in that one ?

Can I play Star Trek with it ?

Rory H June 21, 2022 9:59 am UTC
Yes. It was a criticism in the previous version that basic starship creation rules were not included - and collated into the High Guard supplement.

This Updated version, however, has got basic starship creation rules and also an Index.

Yes, you can play Star Trek with it. There is mooted to be a Traveller: Prime Directive book at some point. However, my understanding is that creator has health and family health problems, which may be significant in slowing down any release. There is also a Element Cruiser boxset and the Deepnight Revelation Campaign which have characters playing commanding officers on giant starships. This is very Star Trek like, albeit in the Traveller Charted Space setting.

The default Traveller game is usually smaller, more independent crew of trading or scout crafts. However, the game has a lot of scope and flexibility for all sorts of campaigns.

In fact in 6 to 12 months I may launch my season 2 Star Trek Adventures campaign and I know 1-2 players are not too fond of the 2d20 System, I'm looking for a replacement.

Thanks for this question and Rory's response. I've been wanting to use Traveller to run a merchant campaign within the Star Trek universe (specifically the FASA Star Trek universe's Triangle area). FASA actually created their own "Trader Captains and Merchant Princes" stuff for folks to have a Traveller-esque experience within the Star Trek universe, but I fill this version would work best.

I just don't want to convert too much and I truly wish there was a "rules digest" version that nixed the Imperium setting stuff (no offense to the legions of fans of the backstory; as someone not familiar with it, it just gets in the way of learning the game...).

Second question, how crunchy is the game ? I'm more on the light crunch RPG these days (I'm 50 now, the age probably ^^)
Reply
Customer avatar
Rory H June 26, 2022 5:15 am UTC
Light crunch. The basic system is Skill (1-4) + Stat bonus (-3 to +3) + 2D6 vs a standard target number of 8. It is generally simpler than D&D. Certain subsystems, like spacecraft design, are more involved but still very straightforward. Not to be confused with other editions of the game that can be a lot more complicated - this one is easy-peasy.

Hello Rory,
The Traveller Prime Directive (TPD) core rulebook is still in development. The Prime Directive campaign setting is the RPG side of the Star Fleet Universe, from Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc. (ADB, Inc.). This universe started some 40-plus years ago with the original Star Fleet Battles (SFB) and expanded over the years through The editions of SFB, it’s various modules, Federation & Empire, it’s various modules, 54 issues of Captain’s Log, and the existing versions of Prime Directive developed for several RPG systems.

But while the SFU is based on most elements in ST:TOS and animated series (under full license from paramount), it diverges from there. It isn’t the Star Trek setting you might know from other RPG publishers nor anything Paramount produced outside of TOS/Animated material. the TPD core rulebook will have SFU versions of the 12 core MGT careers, two additional careers, plus five SFU/Federation specific careers. It will contain fully playable info on several dozen...See more

Does anybody know what each of the PDFs in today's update actually are? We have "Traveller_2022_Core_Rulebook_(eBook)_compressed" that is slightly smaller than "Traveller_2022_Core_Rulebook_(eBook)", plus the significantly smaller "Update_2022_Core_Rulebook". Is the Update the only thing that has the latest updates? Does anyone know why it is smaller than the _compressed version? If Update is the current, fixed version, why are the others included in the current download?

The basic rules in the core book is abbreviated. You can find the Screens in the full High Guard book. Having said that, they each cost millions of credits and have a high TL, so affording them is an issue.

At its heart, Traveller is as hard or soft SF as you want it to be. The default background (Chartered Space aka Third Imperium) is in the tradition of Asimov, Heinlein etc, but you can easily ignore all that and set up a background that suits your own ideas. Ground scale stuff is pretty realistic; Traveller has traditionally kept away from ray guns and blasters - conventional slug throwers and bulky lasers are the norm. Light speed is a limit (moving between star systems is done by exiting our universe for a week then coming back). No FTL radio. But Psionic powers are assumed to work.

Unless you want to change all that. Playing around with background usually won't affect things much - maybe tweak the careers and skill lists if it's too radical departure. But if your space game idea has space navies and merchants, and nobles and pirates and disreputable wanderers between planets, you'll be fine with the careers as written.

This is an excellent version of the rules. The text is almost exactly...See more

"Traveller has traditionally kept away from ray guns and blasters" - fusion gun, plasma gun, neural weapons, disintegrators (most out of reach in tech and cost and legality, but all have been in products done by Miller and Co.). In one of the original LBBs, they actually gave stats for Skywalker (filed off the name, but still...). Meson guns, particle accelerators and charged particle accelerators, black globes, white globes, and ships of massive size... the game definitely in the default Third Imperium setting is science fantasy.

The nice thing about the game at its beginnings was it had no official setting for quite a while so players (and particularly whoever would be GMing) made the game their own.

Psionics probably got in because of the books that Miller and his friends were reading or had read and liked the feel of. Age of sail model (comms no faster than travel, and travel being lengthy in time).

If you want to tweak the game (having done it in almost every...See more

Is this more of a hard sci-fi or is it variable?
Reply
Customer avatar
Rory H February 04, 2022 2:51 am UTC
Variable, honestly. Traveller tends to appeal to the sensibilities of those who prefer hard sci-fi, but it can vary a lot campaign by campaign. It is ‘harder’ than Star Wars, but it is still essentially space opera by default.

The origins of Traveller come from the pulp sci-fi novels of the 60s and 70s-- it is very much not hard sci-fi.

The origins of Traveller were certainly inspired by sci-fi novels from the 1960s and 70s, but pulp magazines weren’t really a thing then (that was more 1930s-50s). I guess it depends on your tastes about how ‘hard’ the sci-fi is by writers such as Asimov, Heinlein and Clarke.

Also, the ship building section in the core is literally a civilian subset of High Guard. Not one difference, just most of the Naval grade stuff, some of the equipment and options and all of the non-default and ultra technology left out. It will let you build custom merchant, paramilitary and science ships to your heart's content up to TL15.

It has 2D ship plans now, I think as part of the general review. While 3D decks are good to look at, the 2D decks are more useful in play

There are some simpler B&W printable copies on the Mongoose website if needed, but the 2D plans in the book are printable as is.

Will this new revision trigger an update of the Referee's Screen? I have never seen the back of the screen but I was wondering if there were tables or page references to update.

Rory H January 01, 2022 4:53 am UTC
I think that pretty much all the charts in the Referee’s screen remain relevant and usable with the Update, although I’d have to carefully check for any minor changes to weapon stats, etc perhaps.

There isn’t a new screen on the current Mongoose release schedule, which is not to say they won’t have one in the future but it doesn’t look like a priority.

I've spotted one change up to now but it does not mean there isn't any others.

In the Task chain table the Ref Screen's table lists that with an Effect of 0, 1-5, 6+ the DM to the current task were 0, +1, +2 respectively.
Now in the 2022 Rulebook, those are changed to +1, +2, +3 respectively. Negative DMs are unchanged.

So basically with the new rules there is no way that a previous task in a task chain CANNOT modify the current task.

This is my first Traveller book and i'm really happy with it ! I have just one problem, where is the character sheet ? I mean the one shown in the book; when I go to the Mongoose website, I get a different one. That's not a major problem but I prefer the sheet in the book.

Nevertheless this version of Traveller is gorgeous and really simple to use, I recommend it !

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
