Advanced Olde Swords Reign: Rules and Magic

Welcome to Advanced Olde Swords Reign,  a tabletop roleplaying game with modern mechanics taken from the 5E SRD (System Reference Document) and based on the original 1974 edition and later Advanced Editions of the World's Oldest Roleplaying Game and some of those editions supplements. It is not a retro-clone but more of an homage to the "old-school" style of play that is more readily accessible to modern gamers.

Rules and Magic is filled with over 300 spells, 12 classes, 7 races, feats, backgrounds, rules for combat, and more. Paired with the Advanced Olde Swords Reign: Monsters and Treasures book you have a complete game, filled with enough information to run years of adventures.

Absolutely loving this so far seems like exactly what I’ve been looking for as far as a mix of OSR and 5e. One clarification I was hoping for was how the old school saving throw conversion portion works. Is the DM supposed to decide the dc for the old school saves and the player rolls a strength, dex, etc. save?

Yes, the referee should choose a DC if it’s a trap or something similar, but to make that easy you just use easy, normal, or hard (page 90). Likewise, if it’s converting a save against a monster or NPC you just base the DC on the monster or NPCs Hit Dice (page 13 in Monsters and Treasures).

Hi there, I purchased the hard cover physical books (both this one and the monsters & treasures book) from Amazon. I believe it may be the same printing as Lulu.com but I am not sure. I just want to say they are beautiful books and the bindings are good. I have not start reading them but am looking forward to it! Great work and thank you!

Thank you! I believe the main differences between the Lulu and Amazon prints are that the Lulu ones have slightly heavier paper but a glue binding. The Amazon ones have a stitch binding. I prefer the Amazon ones. If you’d like the PDFs also email me at scottgeg@gmail.com and I will send you some complimentary ones.

Interested in adding this to my game library. Noticed it was removed as it was getting updated. Safe to purchase this? Don't want to buy it and then have no access to the download if it gets removed again...

Howdy, I've recently been getting into OSR systems, and I saw this along with "Olde Swords Reign Classic"
What is the difference between these two systems? Are they compatible? If they are different, Hoe so?

They are about 85% compatible, the main difference being that Classic has spells and weapons and treasures based on the 1974 era white box rules; and Advanced has spells, etc based on the Advanced 1e late 1970s rules.

As far as what’s in them Advanced has 12 character classes and 7 races (Classic has 4 of each), advanced has about 100 additional monsters, 150 or so additional spells and more of everything really.

Also Advanced is full color pages and art and Classic is all black and white art.

I am looking for a ruleset to make my 5e game more OSR like and hardcore for a long time now, but my problem is always the same, these products assume that you are going to be using their class variants. So my question, because I see you have those as well: if my players stick with the original 5e classes as they are, would these rules be of any use to me by tweaking hp, rules, combat, or any other mechanisms in a way that we can keep using the original 5e classes with all their skills, feats and whatnot but still making combat faster and the gameplay experience more hardcore?

No, I don’t think this would work for you. This is a standalone game, the rules are only slightly modified from 5e, but the classes, races, monsters, spells, etc. are based on the original 1974 white box and supplements, with some added flavor from the 1st Advanced Edition.

Heya, any chance of a soft or hardcover copy at some point? Pretty interested but would rather wait if a physical version is to be released eventually

I don’t think there will be because of how long it takes to get proof copies now, it is available in premium, 80 lb. paper on Lulu (Google search for Lulu coupons though because they are pricey) and it’s available on Amazon.

The Lulu copies are really nice Mark! In case you haven’t got yours yet. Thanks for buying one, I know they are crazy expensive, with printing costs going up I priced them and the Amazon prints in a way that I make $3 a sale to keep the costs as low as possible.

Can you use this rule set to run AD&D 1e modules?
Customer avatar
Scott M October 01, 2021 11:32 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Yeah, pretty easily, you may have to adapt some monsters if they aren’t in the Monsters & Treasures book, but the work is minimal. And there’s a section on how to convert monsters to this game in M&T.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
