Fenix English Edition 1, 2021

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fenix #1, 2021 is centered around GHOSTS and the UNDEAD, but you will also find some fun and interesting interviews, articles and a scenario to new and upcoming games such as Jim Henspn’s The Labyrinth and Cora Quest. Graeme Davis introduces you to some Fortified Spirits and Pete Nash goes straight for More Undead Horrors on Monster Island.

Fortified Spirits – a 4 pages article by Graeme Davis
Graeme Davis on how to add variety and keep players on their toes

Most fantasy and horror games divide incorporeal undead into a small number of types — the most common are banshee, ghost, specter, and wraith — and every individual of a particular type is identical to every other. This article takes a systemless look at the properties and abilities of incorporeal undead, drawn from folklore and paranormal studies as well as from various game rules, and proposes a way to create individuals that will add variety to your games and keep players on their toes.

More Undead Horrors for Monster Island – a 4 pages article by Pete Nash
As if the infamous isle was not scary enough, in this issue we take a look at yet more nasty beings that infest its humid jungles...

Undead are the nightmare horror of every fantasy world. Paradoxical things that straddle the razor’s edge betwixt life and death. Creatures that cannot be killed, since they are already dead, yet still remain animate to haunt the living… somewhat akin to a cross between Schroedinger’s Cat and the unending nightmare of government bureaucracies

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth the Adventure Game – 2 pages interview with the Game Rules Author

An interesting conversation about a game based on the motion picture Labyrinth, from 1986, famously featuring David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King. Of course there are interesting questions and answers to be had about this game, not the least why and how it was made.

CoraQuest – a Dungeon Crawling Game for Children – a 2 pages introduction

Fenix board game editor Marcus Brissman got inspired by an upcoming board game by and for children. Here you get to know more about CoraQuest and its development.

4 Treasures and a Burial – a 2 pages scenario for CoraQuest

A halfling known for his large collection of hero memorabilia, approaches you with a quest: he wants four items that once belonged to the great hero Fenton Miller: His hat, his sword, his boots and his belt. If you could bring him all four he could put them in his hero museum and you’d get free admission for life. What a great reward!

Happily you set out on the adventure and soon find the dungeon where all the items had been seen last. This should be easy!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
