“Life is tragic simply because the earth turns, and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time. Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, which is the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death – ought to decide, indeed, to earn one’s death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life.”

― James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

RED GIANT: QUICKSTART RULES

Red Giant is a Tabletop Role Playing Game influenced by, but not limited to, anime and manga such as Vampire Hunter D, Berserk, and Claymore. Red Giant aims to recreate the various themes, dynamics, and scenarios seen in these types of media.

Red Giant is very adaptable and can be used in a myriad of ways to suit your tabletop game, as the core of this system provides many tools for use in creating your own customized session.

No one knows how the Red Giant came to be: some people believe it was an act of god, some believe it was due to ancient technology, but no matter how this planet became cursed, it is clear that

YOU CANNOT SAVE THIS WORLD.

Stories passed down through the ages all describe in detail a day long ago where the sun suddenly grew and became consumed in a blood red color. As the people stared at the sky a crimson haze slowly crept across the surface of the planet. It’s been said that this was the beginning of what was known as “the end of the world” or “the rapture” by people of that time.

From this day forward humanity and the world that they knew was forever changed, horrific beings and aberrations began to rise, seemingly from the soil itself. Beings of absolute terror and structures the human mind cannot comprehend appeared from nothingness. It was not long before humanity was ultimately driven to the edge of extinction, facing these impossible threats.

People now eke out a small existence throughout the lands attempting to avoid or defeat the horrors and creatures that have awakened from the planet in order to survive, but for what and for what cost?

Through a quick reading of this book, I was a bit confused on what Dice I was supposed to use at first as my eyes skipped over "size of the dice you roll for a check" on page 13 of this rulebook. Perhaps putting the words "size of the dice" in bold and or italics might make it easier for readers to not speed read over that important part despite it being in the beginning of chapter 2.
Also, the Fairy monster in the Bestiarium has the same Burning Man ability as the Charred monster, so not certain if that was on purpose or accident.
I cannot fully judge the final product based on this quickstart rulesbook, so I will just say that it is as solid like OverArms Quickstart rulesbook, just that OverArms was a bit more clear that we were using a D4, D6, D8, and D10 for things.
The more darker atmosphere for this quickstart game is fine, though it is much more geared towards Players and Character creation than DMs and telling them what should be put down into their bleak worlds. It...See more

I want this game to succeed so I will give a fair criticism/review from what I've read of it. I will be the first to say that I have not yet ran this system or played in it but I do see potential. In summary, I think the censorship of many rules that are meant to sell the future core rules book is hurtful more to the quickstart rules, although I understand the intention I think leaving that information in the quickstart and then censoring makes the product more disappointing than if the rules were left out entirely. Especially in the case of the magic system which was EXTREMELY trimmed out to be almost non-existent, even worse so that one of the sample monsters uses one of those magic types that is not in the quickstart rules, leaving it up to interpretation. I also read the rules for dice rolling to be a bit confusing, my interpretation being that they roll two different die depending on the rating of the characteristics being rolled, in addition to any bonuses, advantage, etc. If this is incorrect then it is...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
