Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them,

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Enter the world of Middle-earth with The One Ring™, the official tabletop roleplaying game based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Designed specifically to evoke the atmosphere of The Hobbit™ and The Lord of the Rings™, the game contains rules for creating heroes and sending them off on adventures in a land threatened by the growing Shadow.

This beautifully illustrated, full-colour hardcover manual presents Middle-earth as it was twenty years after Bilbo Baggins’ remarkable disappearance and unexpected return. The great events narrated in The Lord of the Rings™ are still fifty years away, leaving plenty of room to narrate stories worthy of an epic.

Now in its second edition, The One Ring™ comes with updated and revised rules, a new visual style, and a focus on the land of Eriador — the lone-lands west of the Misty Mountains. Among its key features are:

  • Rules for travelling across the land (Journey), facing frightening foes (Combat), and meeting the personalities of Middle-earth (Council).

  • Thorough advice for the Loremaster on how to bring Middle-earth to life, including rules for magical treasure, the Shadow, and the Eye of Mordor.

  • In-depth information on six Patrons — individuals sponsoring the adventures of the Player-heroes — including Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey.

  • A bestiary containing a spread of adversaries, from lowly Orc Soldiers and Highway-robbers, to monstrous Cave-Trolls and Barrow-Wights.

  • Rules to create your very own Nameless Things — unknowable beings from the dark corners of the world.

  • A complete Landmark adventure, The Star of the Mist, with extra support for new Loremasters, in the form of tutorial advice throughout.

I see that others are asking about errata and its inclusion in the pdf, so I'll ask too. Is there a timeline or anything for getting the mistakes corrected in the PDF? I would love to pick up the game but I'm not looking to consult an errata document to play.

Is what others publishers do with their PDFs, it saves a lot of time for players and LMs alike to have the whole book corrected.

Yeah, I know.
I'm thinking that it is easy for any game without a very strict and tricky license like this one.
I don't know how many hurdles they have to evade to publish something, as their text and images are always evaluated by the rights holders. Maybe a simple "errata fix" can be a lot of work right now and them prefer to focus their efforts into finishing the release for the backers and then start selling all the material to other buyers

Out of curiosity, are there any plans for playable Wizards? Not sure if I'm missing it in the book.

There are only 5 wizards in middle earth: Gandalf, Saruman, Radaghast, and the 2 blue wizards, and they are Maiar, like the Balrogs and Sauron. This game tries to stick to Tolkien's vision of middle earth, unlike MERP, so no, there are no playable wizards.
There are however subtle magical abilities in some of the cultural virtues that PCs can earn.

The Wizards, Istari, are meant to be Patrons of the PCs.
If you are interested in magic, there is a lot you can do by playing an elf and using Elven Skill, or with any kind of character and wielding a Wondrous Item.
Customer avatar
Harald H January 04, 2022 7:08 pm UTC
This is of course NOT reflecting the books in any way. The Witchking of Angmar ...had magic. The Wsie mistook the Shadow for a human necromancer because there ARE human necromancers in the world of Tolkine's books: many that have fallen under the shadow know magic in the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. So do elves. So does Bombadil. So do any number of beings, mortal or immortal. Playing a character with magic for good or evil would fit perfectly with the books.
But just like MERS goes completely overboard with everyone casting spells all the time, One Ring plunges in at the other side with the little tricks that elves can theoretically learn.
It is a matter of taste, reallly. One Ring has mood and is great at athmosphere. The old rules were ...to that purpose. I do not know the new ones, but obviously the take on magic is the same.

Witchking of angmar (and other nazgul that use sorcery): undead, basically monsters.
Necromancers and other sorcerers mentioned in the books are servants of the shadow, likely follow somekind of cult to Morgoth. There is no clear description of what they can do, but followers of the shadow they are.
Bombadil: not human, something of a mystery, very old and powerful.

All the above are not meant for PCs in a lotr game, as you are not supposed to be a maia or vala when playing, you are not supposed to be a corrupted follower of the shadow (living like a necromancer or undead like a nagul), less so something like Bombadil.

There is magic everywhere, but PCs are not expected to be monsters, utterly corrupted beings or walking gods.

They are expected to be adventurers, like the protagonists of Tolkien tales.

And yes, 2nd edition takes a step further with magic and introduces a rule called Magical Results that allows all kind of fitting magic to be used....See more

I dunno, Marco. I think Adventures in Middle Earth did a pretty good job. But I like Middle Earth in my D&D, just so we're clear on my prejudices.

You've got a good summary of what's available to characters. I'll add that if you're trying to scratch a Wizard itch in TOR, a Scholar character of any background with the right traits and cultural rewards can make a pretty good wizard.
Customer avatar
Scott N January 28, 2022 6:15 pm UTC
If you want to play a wizard of some type without restrictions too much, I suggest MERP, or the old Decipher LoTR game which I have both. Everyone that's done TOR has really kept magic away from players, which is sad for those who have players that want to be low level casters of some type.

OK, I'm a HUGE Tolkien LotR honk.
I liked the LOTRO game, till it went F2P and turned into a circus with clowns on crack.
I LOVED the writing in MERP.
And there were things I didn't like in Jackson's movies. There were things I loved too, don't get me wrong, but Jackson and I disagree on some things I thought were foundational to Middle Earth.
How does this version of Middle Earth stack up with all that in mind?

This game has nothing to do with PJ movies. Is purely based on the books, it has a really good writing and is created from scratch to emulate the tone and feel of JRRT tales.
Everything, from layout, to illustrations, to chosen terms and mechanics was created looking for a specific Tolkien feel.
For example, magic in this game is the more tolkienesque system I have played in any game. It is very elegant and simple and allows elves to achieve what you see in the books without much fuss.

From one Tolkiendili to another, give this game a try!

It does not. Its engine is a second edition of the TOR (The One Ring) system introduced by Cubicle 7 for the first iteration of the game.

As far as I'm concerned the TOR system fits LotR better. But, having far less exposure to the YZE than the TOR system, I'm probably not the best for a comparison. I would say, however, that the system is totally worth a look, and the price.

I think that the Starter Set (is another product) does a great job of teaching the system, and is also a great sourcebook for the shire with a lot of interesting stories to be explored even after the starter adventure.

A good way to think of it is that the 2e system has (most of) the same parts as 1e, but each of those parts has been reworked. So it will be familiar, but best not to assume you already know the details!

The revised version of 1e already clarified that first printing quite a lot, so expect that to be continued here.

It is a completely different engine, but it does use a d6 dice pool. If you are familiar with Forbidden Lands you will notice they took some concepts from there and ported them over to this system, namely Adventure Locations and the random generation tables to make "Nameless Things." But its not a direct copy/paste.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
