MIDNIGHT – Legacy of Darkness

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A century has passed since the Shadow fell.

A hundred years ago, the forces of darkness swept in from the north. They crushed the free cities of the humans, drove the elves deep into the forests, and besieged the dwarves in their mountain strongholds. Now the corrupt lieutenants of a dark god rule the broken kingdoms with an iron fist and hunt down the few brave men who still stand against the barbarism consuming their world.

Midnight allows you to take on the role of brave heroes fighting against a relentless evil. Based on the 5th Edition System Reference Document published by Wizards of the Coast® under the terms of the Open Game License, this book is fully compatible with 5th Edition. Create a character from the diverse elven, human, dwarf, halfling, gnome, and orc cultures of Eredan, choose a heroic path that will make you a legend, and go to war against the sinister legions of Izrador and his legates!

This book contains:

  • Thirteen new cultural variants specific to the Midnight universe.
  • A simple system of heroic paths for your character to become a champion of the oppressed.
  • New gifts and spells tailored to the unique challenges of the Eredan.
  • A detailed guide to the rich and storied world of Midnight.
  • Multiple opponent profiles ranging from level 1 to level 20.

Rules are not included in this book. You must have the 5th Edition SRD or equivalent source to use it.

Hi, I bought the book the day before yesterday and picked up the PDF yesterday (French translation both). I'd like to know what subclasses are allowed for each character class? I didn't see this information in the basic book.

While I love the world parts and lore in this book, and I get why they simplified the systems and weaved it all tighter in the rule system (because 5E simplified a lot compared to 3, and that's a good thing in my book), I am missing a lot of options in this version, starting with mixed races like the Dworg (half dwarf, half orcs) which were kinda bitter to play (and one of my players did). I have no trouble with them converting former classes into heroic paths (though, let's be honest, new classes would have been great), but there's heroic paths missing, like the Shadow Walker...

Funny thing is, we had a two-players campaign and converted to 5E, and where really looking forward to finally have an official version and well, one of the characters is a Dworg, the other a Shadow Walker... In order to convert we had to come up with the same house rules we already had in our game. Rule-wise, this 5E version gave us specifically nothing.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great setting book for...See more

Far inferior to 3.5 setting book. The lore is all there, but you get almost nothing on the system conversion. Most of it feels lazy (same classes, less races, no special bonus for setting's weapons...).

If it's your first time the setting is great. If you are here for a rule conversion this is disapointing.
Let's "hope" that in future suplement the lack of depth is fixed and hopefully they add something (instead of charging for copy pasting the lore in a new edition).

I have all of the 3rd edition Midnight material.
I don't like/play/run 5th edition.
Is this worth getting for the setting lore? Or has that not changed any from the 3rd edition material?

Stick with 3rd edition Midnight. While 5th edition is nice for those who never experienced Midnight before and want to run it with 5th edition, the 3rd edition Midnight lore is simply superior. The developers changed just enough to make the setting generic.

Generic ? sacrifices, violence, evil wins, dispair, where is this generic ?

375 pages, I had the original 3.0 Midnight, there wasn't as much pages. 1st ed had 256 pages, 2nd ed has 400 pages so no I don't think this is "generic"

I have all the 3x edition material as well. I intend on running Midnight 5e in conjunction with LevelUps Advanced 5e. I feel that combination will be superior to the 3x version and ruleset.

I want to run an adventure set in this world, but I am pressed for time as far as crafting the path. Any good modules or adventure paths from this or other sources that would work here? I usually cannibalize modules anyways, saves me that precious time after work. Thanks!

I'd recommend looking back to the 3.5 era for content as this is brand new and has none.

Very disappointing. As an old grognard who had a standing order for every 3e Midnight supplement from my FLGS back int he day, I feel like they just missed the mark.

The setting is there. The fluff is there. The feel... not so much. The mechanics for bringing Midnight to 5th Edition are severely lacking. I say that because they left out a lot - not stuff from the years of supplements that they had in 3rd edition, but stuff that was in the original 3e Midnight CRB.

No half-races. No Defender class. No special weapons (technically, they are there, but almost all are "Treat as existing weapon x with no modifiers"). No new sub-classes to the existing 5e classes. No new classes (so no 5e Monk, no Defender, if you want to be an unarmed combatant, I guess be a fighter?). No Wildlander (play a Ranger, I guess?). You can play a 5e paladin or Bard though!?! They do give write-ups for the standard (full) races of Midnight, but not the half-races (dworg, dwerro, elfling).

The...See more

An intriguing but also rather flawed interpretation of the Midnight setting. It is missing some of the elements that made the 1st and 2nd editions unique, such as the survivor class and the Elfling and Dwarrow races. It also shows a lack of imagination on the part of the author as they have changed the gender of some of the cast so that they are now women, rather than coming up with interesting new female characters themselves.

OK, can you please elaborate? Which characters that were previously male are now female?

Jaden Norfall, and the head of The Gorand Clan of Bodruna are now women. The Nightking Jahzir also has a different name and background. There is not much consistency between this edition and the previous ones.

Thank you for the answer. Why would they ever change Jahzir? He was one of the coolest characters of the setting...

Same here. A friend and I both picked up a copy from different local gaming stores. Both were still shrink-wrapped. Neither of us could use the code, it was "expired" on release day (the 27th). Has anyone been able to redeem the free PDF code from a hard copy of the CRB?

So I tried my code again today and it worked. Someone on RPGnet said that they were looking into getting all PDF codes reactivated, so hopefully it's working for you and your friend now!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
