Encounters Free Sample (Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting)

This publication contains two of the 21 system-free encounter tables for general and specific areas, 14 nation-based and seven terrain-based, that appear in the popular and Platinum-bestselling Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting. All of these tables can be used either individually or in conjunction with each another, and within the context of the Kos campaign setting or as part of any other appropriate milieu.

This setting is a universal swords-and-sorcery milieu that has deliberately been designed to be system-free and compatible with any set of role-playing game rules suitable for ancient, medieval, or fantasy venues. It is especially suitable for games using the 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons, OGL/d20, Pathfinder, “Basic” Dungeons & Dragons and Labyrinth Lord retroclone, and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules. The Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting is also fully supported by the d-Infinity Online game magazine, which contains free bonus content, crunch material for a number of game systems, fiction, and other resources associated with it.

We produced this premium free extract of Encounters to give people a sense for what it contains and help introduce the Kos campaign setting to those as-yet unfamiliar with it. This publication contains:

* The first half of the full Introduction from Encounters.

* One-quarter size versions of the Kos Island, Aegean, and Mediterranean maps that appear in Encounters, each of which is given two full pages in that publication.

* Complete system-free encounter tables for one of the nation-states that appears in Kos campaign setting, the Republic of Rome. Other tables that appear in the full version of the publication are devoted to encounters in the countries of Kos, Abbadonia, Aígyptos, Amazonia, the Tetrarchy of Anatolia, Attica & City State of Athens, Çatalhöyük, Gades (City of the Dead), the Magocracy of Mesopotamia, the Grand Duchy of Porphyris, the Grand Redoubt of Trinacria, the Kingdom of Tyre, and the Syndicracy of Zueri.

* Complete system-free tables for Swamps, one of the terrain types covered in Encounters. Other terrain types covered in the full edition of the book include Coastal, Deserts, Forests, Hills, Mountains, and Plains.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
