Creature Feature: Mellified Monsters - A New Monster for Call of Cthulhu

Creature Feature

Last Mile Game Logistics, LLC is proud to present our Creature Feature! line of Community Content for the Miskatonic Repository. Our aim is to produce novel monsters and named entities that may be easily dropped into any game (from adding them to an existing scenario or homebrew campaign or to based a one-off session around them.

Each Creature Feature! contains a detailed write-up of an eldritch horror, including a full stat block. This is followed by a Use it Tonight! section, providing scenario ideas and alternate variations on the creature as it might exist or be encountered throughout time (Invictus through the End Times), in an easy-to-use format.

Mellified Monsters

“…in the lands of the Arabs, there are men 70 or 80 years old who are willing to give their bodies to save others. Such a one takes no more food or drink, only bathing and eating a little honey, till after a month his excreta are nothing but honey; then death ensues. His compatriots place the body to macerate in a stone coffin full of honey, with an inscription giving the year and month of burial. After a hundred years, the seals are removed and the confection so formed used for the treatment of wounds and fractures of the body and limbs—only a small amount taken internally is needed for the cure.”

—Li Shizhen, Bencao Gangmu, 1596

Whether finding an old stone sarcophagus at an auction or unearthing one on an archaeological dig, this new horror should make for an interesting (and unexpected) encounter for new and veteran players alike.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
