Now updated to Mothership 1E!

One sits down on a desert sand dune, sees nothing, hears nothing. Yet through the silence something throbs, and gleams...
- Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Desert Moon of Karth  is a space western sandbox adventure zine for the  Mothership  Sci-Fi Horror RPG

Karth is a tiny mesa studded moon on the galaxy's edge. The only way down is an antique space elevator to the lawless boomtown of  Larstown ; a place surrounded by even greater danger and strangeness in the wastes beyond. Survival or salvation is not guaranteed, partner.

Harvest ossified coral corpses to live forever. Become an involuntary organ donor. Dodge ancient orbital defenses. Explore sand blown ruins. Hunt the fearsome sandsquid. Ride camels through the dunes. Drink whiskey until you've forgotten your own name.

Karth's  inspirations include Dune, Firefly, Alien, John Carter of Mars, Cowboy Bebop, The Dark Tower, spaghetti westerns, and modern adventures like  Hot Springs IslandA Pound of FleshUltraviolet Grasslands , and  Slumbering Ursine Dunes .

You'll find plenty to use for your other sci-fi RPG of choice like  Stars Without NumberTraveler , or  Starfinder  with a touch of back alley stat surgery.

Desert Moon of Karth  is a meaty  52 pages , chock full of evocative illustrations and also includes:

  •  10 detailed and dangerous locations  to explore including a ship graveyard, camel ranch, organic coral caves, and a decadent shattered spire.
  •  Regional Moon Map  and rules for point crawling navigation.
  •  Detailed Larstown map , rumors, NPC's, prospective jobs, and fine establishments.
  •  4  volatile factions  for players to interact with including immortal organ harvesters, tribal park rangers, extinct coral beings, and a colonial boomtown of prospectors.
  •  Evolving encounters based on the day/night cycle  (and it's sometimes night for a week).
  •  Tons of 1d10 tables  ranging from creepy prayers, to strange technology, to requested organs, to random drugs.
  •  Rules for sandsquid hunting  and a dungeon crawl within one, should you be devoured.
  •  3  detailed dungeon maps,  8 new creatures, the dark secrets of eternal youth and more!

Man this is like a living breathing planet, I love this little western town. This is adventures within adventures, each page alone seems like it could be an adventure in itself.  Oh it's so beautiful, I just want to play it so bad
    - Alan Gerding,
    Tuesday Knight Games

Looks really good! It's very well made, the art is really nice, layout is great, and there's lots of stuff to adventure in here. It gives you tons of material to just travel around this tiny moon.
    - Ben Milton, Questing Beast

Karth oozes charm. Every location has depth. Every NPC is nuanced or weird. Random encounters draw you deeper into the factions and encourage you to visit other locations. Every page has a dozen ideas to fuel your GM inspiration. - Technical Grimoire

I love this module, there's not a lot to dislike!-Brad Kerr, Between Two Cairns Podcast

Would it be possible to add a "legacy" version to the files for those of us who still have the older edition instead of 1e?

The "link" to the Mothership RPG in the product description doesn't link to anything.

I would be intersted by a POD version for this book, as well as Abilities Considered Unnatural from the same author. Why has it been removed ?

Is there any update on the availability of the POD version? It is still showing as PDF only for me and I have a discount code burning a hole in my digital wallet. :)

I've bought a copy of Desert Moon of Karth. I love the content, very happy with the PDF. But the print copy is very hard to use. The content is so close to the center of the pages and the binding is so tight that you lose about 10-15% of every page. I've contacted DriveThruRPG's customer service in case it was a misprint, they opted to send me another copy. Unfortunately, I just think the layout has not been thought for print. The maps are especially unsuable because of the missing content at the center.

I don't know about other sources of physical copies, but I would not recommend buying a physical copy on DriveThruRPG. But do buy the PDF, the content is awesome.

I've updated the print files since your review and should be useable for folks. I had some test proofs sent where I could see the centerfold portion of the maps decently so hopefully was a fluke. The lack of ability for perfect bound products to lay flat is a hinderance to usability compared to my staple bound offset print editions but I want to let folks have the option to purchase a decent physical copy that would otherwise be punitively expensive for me to ship them. The POD option will be restored shortly.

Should I contact DriveThruRPG customer service again after you've successfully updated the POD option?

Hi Joel! I just downloaded the 1e updated version, thanks! This looks great and I'm listening to the amazing soundtrack while writing this comment :)
I have a minor problem opening one of the color player handouts, Larstown.png. It appears that the file is corrupted. I tried opening it with multiple programs and re downloading the file. Not sure if this happened to anybody else.

Should be fixed, it's because the file size was way too large on the image. Uploaded a resized version.

Hello there! I just bought a physical copy of the adventure from the online store "Pit of Infinite Shadow" (https://store.cave-evil.com/), but the store owner said it doesn't come with PDF versions of the adventure. I know other online stores offer the PDFs when you buy the physical copy. So I was wondering if it was possible to get the PDFs from you? What's you policy with this kinda thing?

Hey Chad! Several retailers like Tuesday Knight Games, Exalted Funeral, and Floating Chair club will have copies of the fancy Mixam print. I also will probably have a POD version out here soon.

Joel, I bought a print copy of Karth this weekend at Gen Con. I think they said it comes with a free PDF, but I don’t see any way to redeem it! Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
