The Haunted Place

When a group of people, lost in the neighborhoods of Providence in 1925, strike a crazed man with their motorcar, they find the reasons for his running pell-mell into the street are not as straightforward as one might think. Jacob North is fleeing from the terrors of his recently purchased and apparently long-haunted house, but cannot stay away for long. If the investigators are willing to help the man, he might just survive whatever is causing the strange occurrences in what the neighbors sometimes call “The Massacre House.”

The Haunted Place is a Jazz-Age homage to the haunted house genre commonly used in Call of Cthulhu. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Shunned House” and Sandy Petersen’s The Haunting, this scenario feels like just another haunted house story … but is it?

The Haunted Place was originally written as a campaign scenario but later adapted for convention play. It works for either. It also makes a good introductory scenario for Call of Cthulhu.

The Haunted Place includes:

- A 22-page fully-illustrated scenario set in Providence, Rhode Island, in either 1925 or 1926 depending on which of two introductions the Keeper wishes to use, as well as ideas on continuing the scenario if the investigators erroneously think they have solved the problem.

- Information on Providence, Rhode Island, with more detailed information on the Elmhurst neighborhood.

- Two fleshed-out Non-Player Characters as well as two antagonists for the scenario.

- Information on the occult book Dark History of Providence and a mythos tome.

- Maps of Providence locations as well as the neighborhood where “The Massacre House” is located and maps of the house itself. These include blank maps for the players.

- Eleven handouts including newspaper articles related to the investigation, a short section of Dark History of Providence, and an 1881 map of the area near Dagon Street.

- NPC and investigator portraits to share with the players.

- Six Pregenerated investigators.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
