The Siren - an introductory adventure

Courtesy of Free League Publishing, this introductory adventure is available for only 50 cents US, or the equivalent in your local currency.

With 13 pages of adventure, plus five double-sided pre-genererated character sheets, it is the perfect way to introduce players to Coriolis, on the convention circuit, on line, or at home. Designed to be completed within just two hours, it also offers further choices for tables with the luxury of a four hour convention slot.

Set on a Miran prison colony, the pre-generated characters represent inmates from all walks of life. Tasked by the elderly leader of their community with returning an artefact to a rarely accessible ancient temple high in glacier country, the team will face a variety of threats and challenges that will introduce them to Year Zero Engine dice rolling, the power of prayer and other aspects of playing in the Third Horizon.

Although pre-generated characters are included, you can run this adventure with your players’ personally created characters if you wish (though hold off on letting them have access to their starting equipment). If they succeed in their mission it could be the beginning of a whole campaign.

Written by Matthew Tyler-Jones, one half of the team behind Effekt - the podcast about all things Free League and more, co-Author of the Alien RPG core book adventure Hope’s Last Day and last year’s Vaesen adventure Summer in December.

Commissioned by Mattias Lilja of Free League for this year’s conventions, the writing has been paid for. Purchasers paying the minimal price here are contributing to outlay on art (including a cover by reknowned community artist John Salquist) and ensuring that each download is recognised by DriveThru’s charts and badges. Each badge achieved by sales of this adventure will be rewarded with expansions detailing more about the penal colony including Kasbah, Salvagetown and the Siren. (Woah! I did not expect to hit copper in a day! Thanks people for your purchases, I will be adding content to celebrate, but I am not ready quite yet. Watch this space.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
