Twilight: 2000 4th Edition Core Set

Kalisz. We’re still only in Kalisz. We need to get out of here. Fast. The artillery barrages are getting closer. The Soviets will be here soon. Sarge says we move out after dark. I’m not sure we’ll last that long.

A classic roleplaying game returns. This new retro-apocalyptic edition of Twilight: 2000 goes back to the roots of the franchise with open-world roleplaying in the devastation of World War III. Just like the original 1984 edition, this new game is set in a year 2000 devastated by war – now in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union never collapsed.

Twilight: 2000 is a roleplaying game about survival in mankind’s most desperate hour. Yet, in this bleak world, there is still hope. In the midst of utter destruction, you can start to build something new. Rally people to your ranks. Stake a claim and protect it. And maybe, if you live long enough, start turning the tide. This core set includes:

  • A 152-page Player’s Manual, including rules for character generation, skills, specialties, combat, base building, and travel.
  • A 112-page Referee’s Manual, describing a world at war and including 52 ready-to-play encounters and four complete scenario sites.
  • A huge double-sided full-color hexagon travel map.
  • 16 modular battle maps, designed to create an endless variety of battlefields.
  • Four battle maps for specific scenario sites.
  • 108 cardboard tokens for fighters, vehicles, conditions, and more.
  • 52 encounter cards.
  • 10 initiative cards.
  • Blank character sheets, both color and printer friendly (English and Swedish).

Is there a reason for not allowing double sided printing when printing the rulebook. I get securing the PDF so you can't edit it, but even though I have my printer set to print double sided by default, I cannot make any changes to the single/double sided printing and it only prints single sided. I had gone through 100 pages of paper before realizing it.

Update:

Apparently it was an issue with the printer where I was sending the file. Strangely it was only affecting the Twilight 2000 books and no others. It's working again and I'm actually able to print them properly. Sorry for the confusion.

I’m loving the game and would like to try it solo however I can’t fill in the .pdf character sheets as they are password protected. Anyone else have this problem?

Just got a very fast reply from Free League. Unfortunately the password can’t be shared due to copyright reasons but I simply took a screenshot of the character sheet on my iPad and am annotating the resulting .jpg. I’ll explore converting that to .pdf to make it a smaller file size.

Regarding the latest update----
Changes Made:
"2023-01-15: An updated version of this title is
now available. A few minor edits have been made...."

Ok, but the files available are:
T2k_Referees_Manual_220804.pdf
T2k_Players_Manual_220804.pdf

presumably August 04 2022.

Are these the latest (2023-01-15) files???

For those of us who backed the Kickstarter and have physical books, is there some sort of easy to print errata that includes the new updates to the core book?

Got the box and this PDF Set. Was hoping for JPG Maps for easier VTT use, but I guess it will just be a few more steps for me.

Great product and glad I came across it.

We have played the game since pre-release and I think it's excellent. You don't get bogged down in tiny fairly irrelevant details and can get on with the gaming. Some personal discretion has to be made regarding the use of skills, which are broad in general. Because you're a computer engineer doesn't necessarily mean that you're also an expert at demolitions, as both skills use Tech.

It's not a combat/ war simulator, but it's an excellent game for telling a story. Currently we are playing Swedish partisans, trying to organise resistance against the invading Soviet forces.

If you want to have a game with high book keeping, this is not it. But the combat system works much better than T2K v 2, where even a headshot from a. 44 magnum was unlikely to give you more than a bad headache...

One thing that should have been included was information on the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria - given a Polish start to a campaign one very logical escape route is to the south - given the fact that all three nations are fighting with NATO against the Russians there should have been some detail on Soviet forces and allied forces there - maybe not the whole country but at least the border areas - hopefully it will be detailed in the Black Madonna release

Why bother? As the very cogent review points out your Players will have maxed out characters before they even leave Poland. This is NOT designed for campaign level play. It's designed for one shots or short scenarios at best.

Except that is totally not true. If you concentrated exclusively on a single skill and did not improve anything else, it would take about 9 sessions to get it from a D6 to a D12. The lower level advances come quick, but take longer the higher they get. There are a dozen skills, and 70 specialties. I don’t know how often you get to play, but running bi-weekly or once a month games, you could easily run a single character for years.

This might be of concern if you assume that every game has to follow the zero-to-hero model of character progression.
There are plenty of games that don't measure progress or "success" by leveling up and getting stronger-better-faster; they don't have any built in mechanics to improve skills etc. because they're not needed to tell a compelling story.
I would be perfectly happy to play Twilight 2000 without any kind of mechanical character progression because, to me, it's that kind of a game.

I don’t think there is anything in the box set that suggests you can’t run long term, sandboxy campaigns with it. I think the resources within the box are limited by what could be included in a core set, but it is straightforward to build on the game with supplements as with any other game.

I’d also just suggest that, for the sake of providing maps and doing cultural research, you could set Twilight: 2000 anywhere on the globe. You’d have to invest in doing that of course, but to me that is part of the fun of the hobby.

Yes, I am coming more and more to the opinion that, at least for some game eras, unrestrained levelling up is ... excessive and unrealistic ... though something with, effectively, *close* to no character improvement such as the various iterations of Traveller, is excessive in the opposite sense. I believe there needs to be something in between ... but TW2000 isn't it, though a modern military game cries out for such.

The main problem is that lack of Skill differentiation. and, therefore, the severe constraints on what a character can do, and, therefore, severe constraints on the type of scenarios you can run ... primarily or partly civilian scenarios are, as the rules stand, going to be extremely difficult to run unless you use a lot of handwaving ... though I can see ways in which they could easily be added and enhance the possibilities of the game (hmm ... sounds like an idea for a Workshop module ... )

There is the option of requiring a specialty in order to use skills in certain ways. Here is the quote about it from the players manual on page 49:
"In the core rules, specialties are never required to use a particular skill or perform a particular action. This is to give the maximum amount of agency to players and avoid blockers. However, should your group feel that this stretches your suspension of disbelief too far, as an optional rule the Referee can impose specialty requirements as they see fit – for example, they might require the Tanker specialty to drive a main battle tank or Launcher Crew to fire a missile launcher."

I think with this rule in play there is more than enough granularity in the skill list.

And that's assuming you get the maximum of 5 XP every session... Which probably is very unlikely.

2-3 XP per session is the norm in my games (34 sessions so far, no character has acquired an A-level skill). You must also either have a teacher or have succeeded meaningfully at using the skill, and have a period of rest. I have a house rule that you can only gain a single level per week, as well.

But the more important thing is that unlike some games, skills and abilities alone can't save you here. Even the most "max-level" character is still perfectly susceptible to a single bullet to the head.

Being a long-time fan of T2K first edition, I like this adaptation.
It's MUCH less of a realistic military simulation, and that's OK.
The focus is on roleplay and atmospherics that generate a certain mood, which works for what I want in a post-apocalyptic game. They kept the option for the life-story character generation method, which was one of GDW's best features across so many of its game.

Very glad I backed this Kickstarter, and I'm looking forward to playing more!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
