The stars gutter and the skies fade and the earth grows weary with years. Ages of men and of Outsiders have ascended and been forgotten, and only the bones of their cities and the dust of their dreams remain upon this tired world. The Legacy of their laws is woven deep now, the edicts of dead gods and fallen sorcerer-kings made to trace patterns of power we no longer understand. We are heirs to their unseen empires, and our lives are built upon their ashes.

Worlds Without Number is a fantasy role-playing game, one fully compatible with the hit sci-fi game Stars Without Number. It's built from the ground up to provide gritty, hard-edged adventure in the fathomless future of the Latter Earth, a fantastic realm of time-lost sorcery, savage foes, and barbaric splendor. The cold steel in the fists of your heroes and the half-understood sorcery in their tomes must suffice to overcome the monstrous remnants of ancient alien rulers and the present depredations of ruthless lords and hideous beasts alike. The riches of lost ages await in the subterranean Deeps that once held their kingdoms, and even the heavens above are not beyond the reach of the recklessly daring.

Worlds Without Number isn't just a savage game of steel and sorcery. It's packed solid with system-neutral GM tools and worldbuilding support, with hundreds of pages of useful tools, tags, tables, and practical advice usable by any GM, regardless of their favorite setting or system. The well-loved sci-fi tools of Stars Without Number are reworked here to support fantasy gaming, whether in the provided setting of the Latter Earth or in your own carefully-crafted homebrew world. Even GMs who don't prefer the OSR-compatible game system of WWN will find more than half the book dedicated to tools they can use in the systems they like best.

So what do you get in this book?

  • Sword and sorcery heroes of blade, cunning, and spell. The proven OSR-compatible character creation system of Stars Without Number is redone here for a fantasy world of blade and black magic.
  • OSR-compatible rules, allowing you to plunder decades of existing adventure material for your play. You can even pull in Stars Without Number content, as it's fully compatible.
  • The Gyre region of the far-future Latter Earth, a premade sandbox for quick play. Venture forth to clash with the sinister powers that gather in the shadow of the waning rule of the Reaping King.
  • Worldbuilding tools crafted to the renowned Sine Nomine standard. Did you like the hundred different world tags in SWN? Then have two hundred inspirational tags to help you build ruins, courts, communities, and wilderness points of interest. Grab a wealth of tools for building histories, societies, governments, religions, and geography, all written with a keen eye toward producing good, playable content for your adventuring group.
  • Adventure creation tools to soothe the pangs of a working GM, with guides for building adventures out of combat, exploration, social, and investigative challenges. Use the tags you picked in the worldbuilding section to speed up your creation of a good night's gaming.
  • Faction rules for fantasy worlds, with dark cults, fierce lords, grasping abbots, and greedy merchants all serving to keep your world in motion even when the PCs aren't on the scene.

And those contents are in the free edition of the game! If you dare to lay hands on this deluxe, for-pay version, you'll get even more.

  • Heroic characters, ones fired with the prowess of high fantasy heroes and epic Chosen Ones. Don't care for gritty sword and sorcery? Use these rules to turn even novice adventurers into the protagonists of mighty deeds.
  • Legates, those heroes touched with the power of the Legacy itself. Reach beyond the limits of mortal prowess to embrace superhuman abilities and impossible might, and dare adventures that will live for an age in legend.
  • Bonus character classes, including the Adunic Invoker, Darian Skinshifter, Llaigisan Beastmaster, Sarulite Blood Priest, Kistian Duelist, and Vothite Thought Noble. Each one is built to help support a broad character concept, such as shapeshifting, mind control, animal companions, divine blessings, or swashbuckling fighters- concepts you can import to any setting.
  • Additional GM tools, including a hundred fractal adventure seeds, help with extradimensional Iterums, and a sheaf of bonus GM tables for fleshing out architecture, NPC relationships, and random adventure NPCs.

Seize your chance, bold adventurer! Earnest souls have been waiting for years for a fantasy counterpart to Stars Without Number; now it awaits your daring grasp to help you forge your own mighty deeds!

Wow! I think this is the best system for our group! Generic, Rules light and DnD flair :-)
One Question: Beside my "Class-Foci", do i get one additional Foci for free at lvl1?

You get one Focus for free at first level, and then whatever your class gives you. Thus, a first level full Mage would get one in total, while a partial Warrior/Partial Expert would get three in total.

I've noticed a very minor typo, present as of the 4/2 PDF, in the exploration rules on supplies, it refers to "Survival-0" instead of "Survive-0"

I'm still wrestling how to reconcile the differences between Shock damage in WWN and Slaughtering die roll in Silent Legions. The classes from SL, especially the Tough, is tied pretty heavily to Slaughering. And it's not clear how I might map it to Shock. (I do prefer WWN's Shock rules as they are a bit easier than rolling an extra die all the time)

The two mechanics aren't really meant to coexist, because the genre assumptions they embody are very different. WWN defaults to gritty fantasy where any amount of combat usually hurts you at least a little, while Silent Legions is based on non-cinematic Lovecraftian situations where a pistol round has a non-trivial chance of killing even an experienced investigator. Using SL classes with WWN rules would require significant translation, and one is generally better off just using WWN classes and rules or using SL classes and rules.

The description goes on about compatibility between this product and SWN. I also like Godbound. How compatible is this with Godbound?

Mechanically the parts will fit together, but WWN is no more balanced for Godbound than SWN is. You could use it as an alternate set of mortal rules, and Legates are something between mortals and Godbound, but it's not really built to integrate.

Hello, I've noticed the most recent pdf is quite a bit smaller and consequently the images are more blurred/pixelated when zooming in. The last download was bigger but pretty reasonable in size(49.7mb), however the art was significantly more crisp. Will we get this res/file size back? Thank you.

I may revert to larger-dpi images on the next typo update, but I'm not sure when that would be.

I know Mr. Crawford had his reasons for not going with a Premium quality version but I have to really disagree here. Putting this book next to my SWN book just shows how lesser the quality of this standard book really is. It's just not in the same ball park and it's sad. But I've come to realize that the premium quality paper used by drivethrurpg is my favorite paper in quality, texture and feel. Could be my Aspergers Syndrome and my skin sensitivity to different textures.

Someone with a keener eye for such things than mine might certainly notice some difference in the color vibrancy, but to my knowledge, both standard and premium POD books use the same #70 paper- or at least they do according to the information on their support page. The Lightning Source submission specs also maintain a 260% ink density limit on both formats, and both formats use inkjet technology for the printing. Premium uses higher-quality inkjet printers, to be sure, and a careful eye can indeed see differences in color vibrancy, but I'd have to charge $17 more for printing costs alone. I'm sure there are customers who have an eye keen enough to appreciate the difference and are willing to pay the extra cost, but it just doesn't pencil out for me to do it, given the extra administrative management of an additional proof cycle.

Then the information isn't accurate on their support page. If you pull out the standard WWN and a premium SWN and compare them side by side you'll see that in the SWN book everything pops better, from the letters to all the art, the borders, etc. But more than that, look at how much whiter and brighter the SWN white space is. If they were using the same paper, I don't think the SWN book would be whiter and the black ink darker than the standard counterpart. I'm not sure if the paper used in premium is thicker, but it is a different and better quality paper. However I do suspect the paper for premium is slightly thicker too because if you lift the pages up you can see what's on the other side of the standard page more easily than the premium despite the premium printings being much darker - compare how much darker the black ink is in the SWN book than the WWN book (heck, you can see the ink on the other side of a standard page with the pages laying flat under good light; my non-gaming roommate pointed that out...See more

Human touch can feel the difference between single molecule layers. It's surprising sensitive. So I'm not surprised someone is feeling the difference between the two versions.

Hi there, how is the hard cover bound? Just glue? I find HCs with just glue have a tendency to pop apart whereas a soft cover, which isn't an option, have a better chance of surviving regular use.
Thanks

DTRPG POD books are perfect-bound, so they use glue. While your own experience may be different, softcovers generally are significantly more fragile than hardcovers, and I wouldn't want to risk putting 400 pages between cardstock.

I just got my copy. The binding is...less than impressive. I will probably have to repair it out of the box with some craft glue to stiffen it up. A lot of the pages were warped as well and the cover corners are not great. I would wait for an offset print.

So the book says the saving throws are 15 - the appropriate mod and the Character sheet says 16 - the appropriate mod, which is correct?

It should be 16-level-mod. It should always start at 15 as a default due to 1st level.

Matthias H April 06, 2021 10:18 am UTC
Both book and sheet are correct.

The character sheet lists the formula for calculating Saves (16-level-appropriate mod, except for luck).
The book lays out the exact same formula in the "Saving Throws" section.

What you're referring to is actually the "Final Touches" section of Character Creation which concers itself with generating a new 1st level character. As such, it naturally instructs you to fill out your Save values as 15-mod, already subtracting level for you.

I'm not convinced that the extra cost is worth it in terms of additional ink quality and needing to track a separate POD proofing/file maintenance cycle, so for WWN I've kept it at standard color.

The extra cost is worth it for some of us. I'd gladly pay $80 bucks for premium than $60 for standard. The quality is that much better. Now my copy of WWN won't match the same quality as SWN.

When the Offset books are back from the printer and sent to backers, there may be a few extras for sale.

As I've been working through the PDF learning and getting ready for a game, I'm SOOO wishing my Offset was here. Almost, but not quite enough to order a POD too. But it's a close call. :)

If we buy the PDF and later want the book, is there a way to get a discount? Or you selling physical ones from your site?

Alas, there's no elegant way to give later print discounts to PDF buyers. The surplus from the offset print run will later be sold via Amazon and my website sometime this summer if all goes well, but I can't guarantee how many of those will be available.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
