100 Encounters for a Fantasy Jungle (Lore 100)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is a collection of 100 different encounters that can be placed in a jungle - or, to be more up-to-date, a tropical rainforest. They are to a degree influenced by media portrayals of jungles, but the majority of the encounters should be easy to drop into most appropriate settings. These can be used as background, colour and potential adventure hooks. Some of the encounters are potentially hazardous in one way or another whilst others may prove to be useful. They include things, plants, creatures and sounds.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Skunk - A skunk is stumbled across by surprise and it may well spray characters if they aren't quick enough. The smell may attract some creatures, and repel others (an Average Survival roll to stop the skunk from spraying; an Average Dodging roll to avoid being sprayed if that fails).
  • Smell - A strong smell of rotting meat will lead the characters to a cluster of very large pitcher plants, easily big enough to swallow small humanoids.
  • Snake - A large snake is wrapped around a nearby branch, its tongue flickering in and out of its mouth as it raises its head to view those approaching. Whilst unaggressive, it is poisonous and will attack if threatened (make an Average Athletics roll to avoid being bitten by the snake and a Hard Endurance roll to avoid being affected by the poison if that is failed; failure of both results in gaining the Poisoned, PHQ condition).
  • Snare - Leaf debris on the ground hides a rope loop that is intended to capture animals and jerk them into the air using a flexible nearby tree (make an Average Sense Danger roll to spot the snare; an Average Dodge roll to avoid being caught if it isn't detected).
  • Spider - A large spider, several inches across and with bright red bands on its legs and a red circle on its back, is in the centre of a large web stretching across the path.

One page is the front cover, one the front matter and half a page is ads.

The supplement is also available in the following versions: Black Spear, 3Deep, System neutral and Pathfinder. You do not need all versions.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
